Please Support Sen. Kennedy's Bill to Increase the Minimum Wage!!
Edited on Thu Apr-20-06 04:31 PM by Breeze54
Support Senator Kennedy's Bill to Increase the Minimum Wage
Senator Kennedy has sponsored a bill to increase the minimum wage in three steps to $7.25 an hour.
When you sign on as a citizen co-sponsor of his bill,
it will show the broad base of support in the country for increasing the minimum wage.

Please join Senator Kennedy and former Senator John Edwards to tell the U.S. Senate that
it is time -- past time -- to reward work with an increase in the federal minimum wage.

Thank you for taking action.

Please encourage your friends and colleagues to become citizen co-sponsors
of Senator Kennedy's bill as well.

We need to show our strength in numbers.

Count me in! I want to be a citizen co-sponsor
of Senator Ted Kennedy's bill to increase the minimum wage.
No one who works full-time should have to raise their children in poverty.

5. One of the reasons I walked away from (economic) libertarianism
and became a populist was that it was carzy that somehow raising the living standards of those at the bottom of the scale was "immoral" yet it was OK to pay some CEO 7 figures. I would support some kind've scale between the top and bottom workers in a company.(like 25 to one)for example.

9. The minimum wage issue is a
local issue not a federal. Every state and city has their own unique economy that there is no way for the Federal Government to come up with a "suit all" minimum wage. If the people in a state or even a city feel the need for a minimum wage, it would be best to let them set it. State and local governments know their situations and economic conditions better than the Federal Government. It is also easier to vote out state and local politicians than federal politicians.

12. What do you mean "if a state or even a city feel the need for..
a minimum wage"? If there were no minimum wage many employers would pay as little as possible. It doesn't make sense that one city would have it at $5.15 and the next at $6.50, it has to be uniform. It is impossible to live on the existing minimum wage and it must be raised.

14. As I stated very plainly...
The minimum wage is a local issue not a federal. The state and local areas have much better knowledge as to what the minimum wage for their area should be or if they should even have one. IT IS A LOCAL ISSUE....

17. And as I stated very plainly a federal minimum wage must be....
established to give low wage earners a better chance to make a liveable wage. Even at $7.25 a family can't make it but it would certainly help.

23. Why federal???.
I am not against a minimum wage law. I am against a federal minimum wage law. The locals have a much better feel for what the minimum wage should be in their own local area. Washington has no clue what life is like in the real world. Our state and local elected officials have a much better feel for what their community needs plus the fact it is much easier to throw the local bums out than the federal bums.

13. What the Feds do is raise the floor up to where
a family in a poor part of the country can live on it. Yes, FAMILY. It is so low now it won't support a single who lives in the US permanently. The experiment of driving wages down to below subsistence has been a miserable failure for everyone but cheap labor conservatives. It's time to raise that all important floor all over the country.

You're right that living wages are local issues. However, without a significant rise in the wage floor, few of those municipalities will be courageous enough to institute living wage laws; in other words, if town A has a living wage law of $9.00/hour, guess what all the employers will do when they realize they can rent buildings in Town B and pay $5.15. If the minimum wage is already near the living level in poor areas, then moving down the road won't be that big a deal, not worth the trouble.

Kennedy is right, and any Democrat who doesn't campaign on wages is a fool.

19. Very few make just
the minimum wage. I know some people that are not even worth the minimum wage. Putting that aside.... let the locals decide if a minimum wage is needed. There is no business that is going to get and hold quality people by paying low wages. It does not matter where they are located. There are always some keepers and their wage will rise fast so they will not leave and the ones that are not keepers are not even worth the minimum.

ONCE AGAIN...LOCAL GOVERNMENT IS THE BEST ONE TO DECIDE WHAT THE MINIMUM WAGE SHOULD BE.

24. I agree up to a point.

The cost of living and thus the required living minimum wage differs from place to place.

The Federal govt could however set guidelines on which minimum wage should be based to guarantee they are indeed 'living' wages.

After all, economy is not just a local affair.

Clicking away for higher minimum wages. It could happen to anyone. One can barely get by on average and middle-class wages.

If people only knew just how hard minimum wage earners have it, they'd think differently.

Plus, more money means more spending in the market, presumably - but not in Liar-in-Chief land.
