Senator Kerry speaking tomorrow at Faneuil Hall!
Edited on Fri Apr-21-06 05:09 PM by whometense
Sen. Kerry will be delivering a major speech at Faneuil Hall tomorrow morning, Saturday, April 22nd, on the 35th anniversary of his famous testimony in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

From a recent e-mail:

Decades ago I stood up to the Nixon administration and spoke out for a change of course in Vietnam. Four days from now, I will be delivering a speech at Boston's Faneuil Hall on the critically important topic of war and dissent. It's time to remind America that, when a stubborn president has America headed profoundly in the wrong direction, only citizen action can change our country's course.

C-Span will be there to record the speech, and they may show it Sunday evening. If you want to see it, an email to events@c-span.org and viewer@c-span.org might help.

Some Bostonians plan to live-blog the event on DailyKos starting around 10:45am.

The choice of Faneuil Hall is not random.

THE FREEDOM TRAIL -Faneuil Hall

A Boston National Historical Park cooperating site

This old market building, first built in 1742, sits at the site of the old town dock. Town meetings, held here between 1764 and 1774, heard Samuel Adams and others lead cries of protest against the imposition of taxes on the colonies. The building was enlarged in 1806. Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, and Lucy Stone brought their struggles for freedom here in the 19th century. Market stalls on the first floor service shoppers much as they did in Paul Revere's day.

8. Hi, unhappycamper. Say. While you're down there in Georgia,
would you please arrange to have Ralph Reed dumped into a huge vat of manure and then ever heard from again?

I hate to impose this errand on you, but it's for such a good cause.

5. Cspan hasn't put it on their schedule, but they told me it would be shown
the other day. Now I wonder if the person who said it was just trying to stop the calls?

9. It will be on C-Span this weekend.
They confirmed it when I contacted them, too. They said they couldn't commit to live coverage, though.

I can't wait to hear what the Senator has to say. Thirty five years fighting the good fight. Amazing.

I understand it will be live blogged. Interesting.

12. He definitely won't announce anything about 2008
until after the fall elections; he's said that much. Your other point is a really good one. If a senator speaks his mind at Faneuil Hall and the MSM ignores him, will the country at large ever find out about it?

I'm no expert, but if the blogosphere makes a BIG NOISY FUSS, it's a lot harder for them to put the whole event on ignore.

18. He has said that he would make that decision by the end of the year
AFTER the midterm elections. Right now, it's all about the midterms.

Also, to add to what Whom said about the location not being random, neither is the date.

April 22 is the day in 1972 that he gave his testimony to Congress. I highly doubt that picking that date to talk about THIS war was a mistake.

33. When he announces, I'll be ready to put a "Kerry 2008" bumper sticker
on my car. He'll be the guy I'll count on to hammer Bush/GOP short comings and get the media to listen.

IMO,Hillary, Clark, Gore, Biden and the rest won't have the impact.

14. wow...
"only citizen action can change our country's course."

That's a huge rally call if I ever heard one! Kerry, Murtha, Generals, and so many people are telling us to get involved and change our country.

This is great news!

And...there is a peace march in NYC on April 29th as well as a mother's day rally in DC. So both of those are great events to go be the citizen action that Kerry sounds like he's asking from us.

Are you kidding me??
He's asking US for citizen action? Like this was all his idea??
Give me a break!!

~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s No Laughing Matter!
On March 19th, Massachusetts political leaders will attend the annual
St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast at the Boston Convention Center,
to joke and laugh.
On March 19th, military families, Veterans and our supporters will be
marking this day as the 3rd Anniversary of the war in Iraq,
a war that should never have happened.
Politicians will be ribbing and roasting each other on the day that we
embark on the fourth year of a war based on lies -- a war that has taken
the lives of over 2,300 U.S. troops and tens of thousands of Iraqi children,
women and men. A moment of silence is not enough.
Our troops and the Iraqi people continue to be in harm’s way, our troops
continue to be deployed and re-deployed in an unjust and unjustifiable war –
returning with physical and psychological wounds if they come home at all.
Join Iraq Veterans Against the War, Military Families Speak Out, and
Veterans For Peace at the Convention Center as they call on these
Massachusetts politicians to stop business as usual, show some
leadership and speak out to:
Bring our Troops Home Now and
Take Care of Them When They Get Here!
~~~~~~
Who do you think was at that breakfast??
:shrug:

I am glad that kerry's getting louder about it though.

17. Not Kerry, he wasn't there at the St. Pat's Day Breakfast
The biggest news to come out of that event was made in about a 4 minute interview on the pre-show by Cong. Lynch. He came out for a withdrawal plan that would get the troops out by Dec. I about fell on the floor when I heard him say that. Some of the St Pat's Day program was unwatchable, but Lynch made news that got buried that day under the Shamrockery.

Maybe it was the protests or maybe it was his trip to Iraq before the Breakfast, but Lynch had said 'withdrawal' and 'this year' in the same sentence. I heard it.

And the protesters voices have been heard. Listen to the speech, if you get a chance. I live about a 1 1/2 from one of these good people from MFSO. Whose letter do you think I'm bringing with me tomorrow when I live blog? That is what it's all about, after all.

21. Fair enough question...
You want to say, "the citizens are already involved."

Ok, but I can tell you when I canvassed our local area residents people were saying, "Grassroots are great but we need the leaders to get out of their office and start shaking things up."

So in a round about way, you and kerry are saying the same thing. AND you're both tough about it.

Kerry's office called me this week to ask if I was still planning to attend after I had rsvp'd a week ago; they said the response has been extraordinary and to get there early

So, we'll be catching the 8 am boat out of Quincy Mass and will arrive at Long Wharf at 8:40 after a quick stop at Logan Airport(this boat is also the ferry to the airport and then it shoots across the harbor to pull up very near Faneuil Hall). The speech is scheduled for 10:30 am. I'm betting there will already be a line when we get there.

I'll post photos if we get in

We got press passes from the Senator's office, so we go in the 'press door' at Ten. (Gawd I hope this goes well.)

See ya there. It could be a really memorable event. It's Faneuil Hall, so remember to bring your good foot stomping shoes.
