US won't ask OPEC for more oil

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Energy Secretary Sam Bodman on Friday said he will not ask the OPEC cartel to pump more oil even though gasoline prices are soaring and Republican congressional leaders want the White House to do more to fight rising energy costs.

High energy prices will be on the agenda this weekend at the International Energy Forum in Doha, Qatar, which will be attended by officials from 65 countries, including the United States and members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries,

The price for U.S. crude oil hit a record $75.35 a barrel on Friday at the New York Mercantile Exchange and gasoline at $3 a gallon continues to spread to many U.S. cities and towns.


Bodman, who will be at the Doha meeting, told reporters that OPEC members and other oil producing nations "are largely producing everything that they can produce."

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and House Speaker Dennis Hastert plan to send a joint letter on Monday to President George W. Bush urging the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission take "immediate action" against possible gasoline price gouging by big oil companies, the source said.

The lawmakers will also ask the administration to go after any illegal "market speculation" that may be occurring in crude oil and gasoline futures contracts that are traded at the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Finally, Hastert will push the House Energy and Commerce Committee to hold a hearing on what big oil companies plan to do with their record profits and he wants the executives of the companies to testify.

to pawn shops to put gas in their cars...ummm....this could be the true catalyst...especially with * showing no true sympathy...and no courage to do anything about reigning in the oil companies.....

while oil companies reap billions in profits. They have not invested in new refineries or alternative energy. We're all paying and I hope the backlash is brutal.
