Russia: Don't Pressure Iran Over Nuclear Program

MOSCOW — A top Kremlin diplomat warned against threatening Iran with sanctions or the use of force, saying that would only aggravate the international standoff over Tehran's suspect nuclear program, Russian media reports said Saturday.

Rather than getting Iran to stop uranium enrichment, a tougher stance could result in Tehran's total refusal to cooperate with the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency, said Oleg Ozerov, deputy director of the Foreign Ministry's Middle East and North Africa Department, according to ITAR-Tass.

"We firmly stand today for resolving the problems in and around Tehran diplomatically rather than militarily. Increasing international pressure on Iran has no prospects," Ozerov was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.

The United States and European allies are pushing for sanctions because of Iran's refusal to suspend its enrichment program, as demanded by the U.N. Security Council. They suspect Iran is trying to develop atomic weapons in violation of its treaty commitments. The Iranian regime insists the program has only the peaceful purpose of generating electricity. Russia, which has close ties with Iran and is building that nation's first nuclear power plant, opposes sanctions.

6. that's true ...but isn't it sad that we have to trust in authoritarian
Russia and authoritarian China to keep the "leader of the free world"

from pushing the world into catastrophe?

4. The gravest blunder of the neo-cons
They have driven Iran into Russia's arms, something the west has tried to avoid for centuries.

The SCO is a power bloc that will make the bushista archipelego of military bases in inland Asia, irrelevant footnotes of history.

11. It's happening...in fragments.
There was an article about 8 months ago that described how the U.S. was being "evicted" from one country (was it Uzbekistan?). Seems we didn't pay them the rent.

Just last week, there was another article in the LBN. It seems that another country in the vicinity is kicking us out.

It's not only Iran that's moving northeast.

9. No problem. We'll just nuke Moscow and a few other Russian
cities and then send in 4 million troops to do the mop up.

(sarcasm)

12. Check. Mate in two.
Edited on Sun Apr-23-06 12:49 PM by gulliver
Russia gets the whole Middle East. Nice job Bush!

I wondered what that maniac mother in Iran was thinking. The SOB has a big bruddah.

On edit: OK, I don't actually see the "mate in two."

1. U.S. goes to U.N.
U.N. proposes sanctions (will start "talking about them right away")
2. U.S. pretends that matters to try to save GOP in November.
Iran refines uranium in Iran and Russia. Russia a big hero in ME.

That's the least scary (!) way for it to play out that I can see.
