Two little-known Democrats with doctorates are seeking the nomination to oppose Republican Rep. Eric I. Cantor in the 7th Congressional District.
Although Democratic leaders are encouraged by what they perceive as an increasingly hostile environment for Republican legislators, they worry privately that neither Democrat has the political experience to mount a respectable campaign.
The Democrats are Brad Blanton, a Page County psychotherapist who ran as an independent two years ago against Cantor, and Martin J. Dudziak, a scientist who never has run for office before.
The Republican-leaning district includes the West End of Richmond and portions of Henrico, Hanover and Chesterfield counties, as well as other localities. Seventh District Democrats hope to nominate a candidate at a convention May 13 at Deep Run High School, near Short Pump.
