The former Marine general said Sectretary Rumsfeld should be held accountable for "throwing away ten years' worth of planning, plans that had taken into account what we would face in an occupation of Iraq."

Paul Eaton
The retired major general, who oversaw the training of Iraqi troops until 2004, wrote in The New York Times that "Rumsfeld has put the Pentagon at the mercy of his ego, his Cold Warrior's view of the world and his unrealistic confidence in technology to replace manpower."

Charles Swannack Jr.
The former commander of the Army's 82nd Airborne Division in Iraq told the New York Times, "I do not believe Secretary Rumsfeld is the right person to fight that war based on his absolute failures in managing the war against Saddam in Iraq."

Gregory Newbold
The former Marine general, writing in Time magazine, declared, “I now regret that I did not more openly challenge those who were determined to invade a country whose actions were peripheral to the real threat--Al Qaeda.”

John M. Riggs
In an interview with National Public Radio, retired Gen. Riggs alleged an atmosphere of ''arrogance" among top civilian leaders at the Pentagon. Rumsfeld ''should step aside and let someone step in who can be more realistic," he said.

7. This has got to hurt...

look at these clips: "we need leadership", "be held accountable", "at the mercy of his ego", "unrealistic", "absolute failures", "arrogant", "should step aside".

You know Rumsfailed has read this stuff. I can see the tears welling up in his eyes, as he crunches the newspaper and tears Page A-2 into little pieces. He sounded almost humble when he spoke right after the generals' revolt.

But of course, he quickly came up with an alibi: the generals are mad at him because he "transformed the military" and that made a lot of people angry. Yeah, right.

11. Some of those comments irk me a bit.........

The notion that we need better people in leadership to execute this war is more than secondary. We, as a party, were caught up in that game in the 2004 Election. It was about who could more competently handle the Iraq War. This war is morally reprehensible, that is the issue. Some of these comments, specifically Swannack's, appear to accept the premise that we should have invaded Iraq. Surely Rumsfeld and his ilk have been brazenly incompetent, but that's just icing on the cake. This was a disaster from go no matter who was in charge.
