Brown Quits Race For Senate
Campaign Collapses Amid Fundraising Accusations

Matt Brown dropped out of the race for U.S. Senate on Wednesday.

Brown, who is also the secretary of state, endorsed former state Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse in the Democratic primary. Carl Sheeler is also in the race.

Brown's campaign is nearly bankrupt and has been in a tailspin since he was accused of fundraising improprieties. Several staffers were laid off earlier this month.

But just last week Brown promised to continue the fight until the September primary.
"I'm in this race. I'm in it to win it," Brown said Thursday in a statement taped at NBC 10.

Brown's campaign spent heavily at the beginning of the year to improve his standing in a Brown University poll. But he was later accused of trying to skirt campaign-finance laws by having supporters give to state parties, which then donated money to his campaign.

Has it been proved that he committed any wrongdoing? Anyway, I would say that Sheldon Whitehouse will now be the likely nominee, although Carl Sheeler will win some support in the primary.

8. Good post. I spoke to fleeing supporters.

Just the evening before he had met with staff and said he was staying in the race. Sometime between that evening and the following morning he had a change of heart or an offer he could not refuse. The later would not surprise at all. The "machine" which he denounced while running seems to have allowed him to succumb. Better ending the race than potentially if after being elected. I would very much like to pursue a Paul Wellstonian posture with a somewhat more brazen posture. It's the Marine vet in me....
