Looks like Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT) is in deep shit (Billings Gazette)
Burns may use campaign funds to pay for lawyer

By JENNIFER MCKEE
Gazette State Bureau
HELENA -- Sen. Conrad Burns said Wednesday he hasn't decided how he will pay for a white-collar criminal defense lawyer he has hired.

Burns told the Gazette State Bureau on Wednesday he's unsure what fund sources would be used to pay Ralph Caccia, a Washington, D.C., lawyer specializing in white-collar criminal defense and congressional investigations, among other things, according to Caccia's Web site.

The Legal Times first reported Monday that Burns had hired Caccia.

Jason Klindt, a Burns spokesman, told the Associated Press on Tuesday that Burns had hired Caccia to "review the facts" in the Jack Abramoff matter. Klindt said Wednesday that Burns has hired Caccia's firm as his personal lawyer but may choose to have his re-election campaign pay the bill "due to the partisan nature of it," referring to Democrats' attempts to link Burns to Abramoff.

5. The evil of partisanship is not that the opposition party presses for
... an investigation and prosecution, but that the party to which he belongs won't. I'd have more respect for partisans if they actually cleaned up their own parties. That's much of why I'm an independent.

6. Did the Billings Gazette
really use the phrase "deep shit" in one of their headlines??

OK, so I know they didn't. Well, I *think* they didn't. But a fast perusal of the topics here made it look like that was what this thread was all about. :))

7. Nope, but the Gazette has been roughing him up pretty good
As Billings is a very conservative place, a GOP safe haven, it is a real sign of trouble for Burns that they have been on him.

My guess is the state GOP is trying to force him to face reality and get out of the race so they can pony up with a dark horse with little history.

The GOP has also been doing a lot of polling. After a slew of calls from polls to folks around here, Burns story changed from it's all just partisan politics attacks on me to the newly minted they are trying to make YOU look bad in an ad showing him speaking in front of a group. Sure, Conrad, the truth about YOU is an attempt to make the voters look bad... only if they vote for you again, bud, only if they fall for your crap excuses.

From what I am seeing and hearing from my very conservative neighbors, the voters are not buying his whiney, weak assed excuses and diversions. They are ready to trade his seniority (which a state with a total of only 3 in our delegation to D.C. holds very dear) for somebody with an ounce or two of credibility.
