OH-Columbus Mayor Mike Coleman Doesn't Endorse Strickland
Mike Coleman was a Dem candidate in the governor's race, but pulled out when his campaign ran into troubles as Strickland's was growing. He issued endorsements today, but didn't include Ted Strickland. Strickland made the mistake of aligning himself with new Ohio Dem party chair Chris Redfern who used some down and dirty tactics to get elected, and others aren't willing to forget. A group of union guys on the state committee were very rude and insulting to Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones and others, telling them to sit down and shut up, etc.

http://www.cleveland.com/weblogs/openers/

Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman, who dropped out of the Democratic primary for governor, isn't endorsing either of the candidates who are still running.

He's siding with state treasurer candidate Richard Cordray, who has no primary. He backs Secretary of State contender Jennifer Brunner, who also has no competition. But he's not backing Ted Strickland, the Democrats' presumptive nominee for the top office and the endorsed candidate of the Ohio Democratic Party.

...

Coleman and Tubbs Jones both favored Montgomery County Democratic Party Chairman Dennis Lieberman for the state chair's job, only to see him defeated by former House Minority Leader Chris Redfern.

The chairman's campaign was brutal and personal, with some of Strickland's backers openly insulting Tubbs Jones and Dayton Mayor Rhine McLin. Like Coleman, both women are black.

1. That certainly didn't come from Ted
I know Ted Strickland and he's NOT that type of person. One of the nicest guys I have ever known and not a mean streak in his body.

3. Strickland is a good guy
He just used bad judgement in trusting the people working for Chris Redfern. From what I've heard he has distanced himself from the nasty thugs, but he needs to also distance himself from Redfern.

None of those responsible for this nasty incident has mended fences yet, and they really need to do that.

17. 'Appreciate your posting this update and insight, OzarkDem.
Are you going to be in Ohio on the primary night, or at least watching on the news to see what happens?

I've heard positive things about Strickland, too, so I think you're right. Some fence-mending and then on to a blue November!

2. Mayor Coleman
gave his endorsements... The ODP gave their endorsements... the AFLCIO gave their endorsements.

But at the end of the day on May 2nd, we have to worry about the November elections. I hope all Ohio Dems will pull together post primary to work for the bigger picture. Which is eliminating the culture of corruption that has been so prevalent in the Republican Party, electing competent candidates and moving Ohio into a new era of progressive and integrity driven initiatives.

4. Off the path here, but does anyone have a sense about Jean Schmidt's
primary race?

Is she gone on May 2nd or will she survive and go on to the Nov. election?

I'm no fan of Jean Schmidt.

6. I sure hope Ohio residents... even those in Mean Jean's red district..
..vote by what they truly feel in their heart of hearts and get rid of that nasty woman!

I wonder how many Ohioans could look you straight in the eye and tell you with 100% honesty that they support Ms. Schmidt?

Please Ohio! Do the right thing. Get rid of her!!!

10. That middle photo there... is that a Star Trek blouse she's got on?
It looks like it to me.

I think that photo was taken the day she was smearing John Murtha, wasn't it?

18. My prediction: Jean wil hire Bjork as her fashion consultant.
She needs to lose that Star Trek thing immediately.

7. She had nearly a 2/1 lead in one poll a few weeks ago
I think it was 55-30. One of the two main contenders dropped out to allow the other guy a clear shot in a two person race, but the account I read indicated Schmidt was still a considerable favorite.

11. My god, who is it that is attracted to a candidate like Jean Schmidt?

Very hard to accept.

Thanks for the update, Awsi Dooger.

14. Here, I found the link
http://www.democrats.org/a/2006/04/oh-2_getting_an.php

The poll was early April and I have a feeling the race will tighten quite a bit. It might be easier for a Democat to defeat her than a more competent and less controversial newcomer, but I have no idea who will run on our side.

15. Well... you sure know who we all wish would run...
But *sigh* he just can't be talked into it, can he?

16. Thanks for the link Awsi Dooger. I'm going to be keeping an eye out
for this race.

Ohio generally this time seems like a hell of an interesting place for elections.

8. From what I can tell from afar she is in some trouble
This time she has only one major opponent in the primary and she is polarizing even among Repubicans. She won a five way race last time to get the nomination, I don't think she can win a two way race.

12. I'd like to see her abducted by aliens from a faraway planet and
not heard from ever again.

I admit that the odds are kind of long on that option, but a guy can dream, can't he?

5. Obvious BS
"The continued tension between the Strickland forces and some of Ohio's black leaders has Democrats worried that some of their most reliable voters will either stay home, or join the other team."

This allegation is just desperate Repig mischief from whores at the PD.

9. Are they conducting many polls in Ohio for the Governor's race?
I know that some hot Governor's races.. (Pennyslvania is one that comes to mind right off) must be polling quite a bit because we see the poll results here on threads @ DU.

What about Ohio?

Since they are pretty much the "Diebold Capital of the World", it would really be great to see a LOT of polls conducted there so we can have some sort of measure.

With everything I've read about Ken Blackwell, I'd be blown away if he was legally elected..

Then again.. I'm not all that familiar with Ohio..
