CHICAGO | Local unions, community activists and recent immigrants hope that a May 1 march will get more than 500,000 Chicagoans out of the workplace and onto the street -- with workers both getting their message out and keeping their day jobs.
The demonstration comes on the heels of a protracted debate in the U.S. Senate over immigration reform and a March 10 immigrant-rights rally in Chicago that city officials estimate drew nearly 500,000 people.
Building on the momentum of a national debate on how immigrants should be treated as both citizens and workers, a March 10 Committee has been formed in Chicago to organize a march across the city May 1, starting at 10 a.m. in Union Park, at North Ashland Avenue and West Lake Street, and finishing at 4 p.m. in Haymarket Square, at North Des Plaines Avenue and West Washington Street.
"We want to put a little more pressure on the Senate as they convene," said Omar Lopez, co-coordinator of the March 10 Committee. "We're seeking citizenship for all immigrants now in the country."
