Pink's "Dear Mr President" - song of the year?
I know this was a topic a few weeks back, but I've only now heard the song sung. Pink and the Indigo Girls have done something remarkable - the recording is truely stunning. Go buy it, download it, request it from your favorite DJ. You'll be glad you did.
---
"Dear Mr. President"
(Pink, featuring the Indigo Girls)

Dear Mr. President
Come take a walk with me
Let's pretend we're just two people and
You're not better than me
I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly

What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street?
Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep?
What do you feel when you look in the mirror?
Are you proud?

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye
And tell me why?

Dear Mr. President
Were you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
How can you say
No child is left behind?
We're not dumb and we're not blind
They're all sitting in your cells
While you pave the road to hell

What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away?
And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay?
I can only imagine what the first lady has to say
You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye?

Let me tell you bout hard work
Minimum wage with a baby on the way
Let me tell you bout hard work
Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away
Let me tell you bout hard work
Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
You don't know nothing bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
Oh

How do you sleep at night?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Dear Mr. President
You'd never take a walk with me
Would you?

Where the heck have I been?

It's REALLY wonderful. And she has such a great voice, too. The song is wonderfully written AND expressed, and it's really gripping. Plus, you know it's good if you go away from one hearing of it - being able to hum parts of it back to yourself. Especially when you can still do it hours and/or days later.

BTW - Welcome to DU!

11. You should watch the video (link here)
A DU'er made a moving video montage to go with the song. You can download it at the link in this thread:

I highly recommend it. Ice has a knack for pairing the video with the emotional pace of the song. I know it brought a tear to my eye.

I have several songs memorized already and this is one of them. I've yet to hear "Dear Mr. President" on the radio. Is this a single we can request?

Here in the SF Bay Area most stations would be foolish not to play it.

22. Got the CD for $11.99 at Costco...
Buy blue and get a good deal for a great album! DON'T buy it used from Ebay. Spend a few extra bucks and buy it used so that the record labels know this is the kind of music we want and your "vote" gets counted!

23. I'm a huge Pink fan...
I practically wore out my M!SSUNDAZTOOD CD.

This song deserves the highest accolades, though it's probably too much for the industry to be willing to acknowledge, much less elevate.

24. Heard Neil Young today
... not that impressed. But I kept thinking back to the first time I heard "Ohio" by CSNY 30+ years ago on WMBL in Maine. It's creepy thinking that members of that Nixon Whitehouse are back in power, and not rotting in jail.
