LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Antonio Villaraigosa, Los Angeles' first Latino mayor in the modern era, will skip huge pro-immigration rallies planned for Monday to meet with pro football officials in Dallas, leaving organizers feeling like "a ship without a captain."

Oscar Sanchez, an organizer of the Great American Boycott in Los Angeles, said the mayor's office previously told the group he would speak at a downtown Los Angeles rally on Monday -- then backed out.

Instead, the mayor will be in Dallas speaking with National Football League officials about the possibility of bringing a team back to Los Angeles.


Activists said the rallies, which could become the largest protests since the civil rights era of the 1960s, would shut down major U.S. cities and serve as an indicator of their economic power, with or without the mayor.

They have predicted that 2 million to 3 million people would flood the streets of Los Angeles alone.

Mayor Villaraigosa has been unwavering in his eloquent support for immigrant rights, but he has to be in Dallas because he is trying to get a fucking football team in the city because he thinks it will generate additional revenues. He has no control over the timing of the NFL owners' meetings at all.

9. He's Probably Trying To Bring The Chargers Back Home

They began play in Los Angeles in 1960.

I don't see the Chargers getting a stadium deal in San Diego County by Jan 1st. Who can afford to build it? Who will shoulder the burden of paying for it? :grr:

The way the organization has treated their fans over the past four years is horrible. I used to root for the Chargers until they hired Mark Fabiani as their spokesman. He was instrumental in moving the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore and as soon as he came aboard, I knew the Chargers were moving as soon as they could weasel out of their lease at Qualcomm Stadium.

I went through the same crap with the San Diego Clippers in 1984 and the San Diego Gulls (IHL) in 1995. Both teams made overtures to move to Los Angeles for at least a year and eventually they did. The same scenario is playing out. Don't be surprised to see the team in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, or San Antonio in 2008.

That's why I became a Raiders fan in early 2003. :evilgrin:

Even NPR turned it up to 11 with the Villaraigosa bullshitting a couple weeks ago when Villaraigose was trying to make the LA public schools better. They characterized it as a power grab. It was really sick.
