Immigration bill spurs brief boycott of Miller Brewing

Washington - Opposition to Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner's immigration bill led one Chicago group to launch a boycott of Miller Brewing Co. this month because Miller is a Wisconsin company that has made contributions to the GOP lawmaker.

The brief boycott was called off after the two sides met in Chicago and the brewery agreed to run newspaper ads denouncing the bill and to help the group lobby in Washington against the measure.

Miller says it had decided before meeting with the group to oppose the legislation.

On March 10, at a massive pro-immigration rally in Chicago, the Chicago Committee Against HR 4437, an umbrella group composed of Latino community organizations from across the Midwest, announced the boycott.

"The primary reason we targeted Miller was that they had donated money to Sensenbrenner's campaign," said Omar Lopez, a member of the committee and one of the organizers of the boycott. "And since Miller does a lot of business in the Mexican community, we felt they needed to get in sync with the (sentiments) of one of their biggest audiences."
