My LTTE about Canada/US relationship (Bush: Canada = "safe haven")

On April 29th U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins heaped glowing praise on new Canada/US relationship. He told an audience our relationship is experiencing “a breath of fresh air, a new effort, new energy, a renewed momentum,”. He thinks that “Perhaps now we are entering a new era where we focus on all the ties that bind us…”
“Perhaps now” our relationship will improve? Why now? Now that the Conservatives are in power, I guess. I have some news for Mr. Wilkins: the current US administration is what’s wrong with the Canada/US relationship. It’s been the common denominator in many international relationships gone sour.
What’s really interesting is that on the very same day Wilkins was waxing about this “breath of fresh air” we now enjoy with the US, the Bush administration reported on Canada as being a “safe haven” for terrorists. The same report said Iraq is “not currently a terrorist safe haven”! Now is when you should all google the word “doublethink”.
Why do they call us a safe haven for terrorists? They say we have “numerous” terror plotters and “liberal Canadian immigration and asylum policies”. Yes, it’s those evil immigrants, asylum seekers, and terrorist plotters. We probably have mobile WMD labs on our highways too. I think David Wilkins is 30 months early. A positive “new era” in the US/Canada relationship will have to wait for November 2008, barring an impeachment.

a confidence vote. Anytime now... when is their budget up for vote in the Commons again? Hopefully, this time, the NDP will gain more seats and become the official opposition. I'm not that much of an optimist to think they (the NDP) would form the government. At least, not in my lifetime. sigh.

3. Real improvement in the relationship will require a regime change in US

A different Canadian government won't help...only on the surface for those who enjoy the kind of slathering we're seeing at the moment.

Please...of course the ONLY reason why Canadian/American relations are experiencing "a breath of fresh air, a new effort, new energy, a renewed momentum", blah blah, etc etc is because Stephen Harper is now the Prime Minister. Until that time, the Bush Adminstration's attitude, it seems to me, has been, at best, barely disguised contempt. I still remember Bush's speech before Congress days after 09/11...when he was thanking the nations of the world for their good will following 09/11. Well, guess which country Bush "forgot" to mention. That, to me, says all about this regime and its relationship with our friends up North. Until Harper and the right wing Conservatives took control of the government.

Sorry for going off on what might seem a tangent. But you make some excellent points in your letter.

HoF Goalie Ken Dryden has tossed his hat in the ring to be the new leader of the Liberal Party. He could be PM soon! I guess the star Canadian athletes aren't all wingers like their US counterparts.
