John Edwards has the winning issue !
NAFTA and the trade treaties and the loss of jobs. If he comes out in favor of repeal of the NAFTA trade treaties and the GATT, he will have discovered the issue that touches the soul of the Democratic Party and he can come back and beat Kerry. He could win in Michigan with that message even though he has not been competitive in MI up to this point. The massive loss of manufacturing jobs is a big issue. I t has not been talked about very much. John Kerry supported the trade treaties. John Edwards was not in the Senate but he says he would have voted against them. This is the issue of the next few weeks...

2. voted for China Trade Bill
To be honest, I'm looking for somebody to tell the truth about trade. We have to have it, it has helped people all around the world. We have to move forward now that we've made some inroads on trade. I actually believe that anybody who stands up and knocks global trade completely isn't telling the truth. We have to have trade and fair trade agreements.

5. But we don't have any manufacturing jobs left....
We need steel doors for the Humvees in Iraq and there is only one plant that can make them in PA...and it would take them two years to make them. There was a time they could have done it in two weeks... It has weakened the security of this country. We didn't realize that by "trade" they meant they were going to "trade" our jobs....

7. It's created jobs too
It has. We have to go forward and have a candidate who tells the truth about that. Cancelling NAFTA and the WTO are not the solution for jobs in this country. Investing in new technologies so we sell those new products all over the world is the solution.

The Humvee doors is stupid on our part. That's a different issue than trade.

11. The producer names the tune and the consumer does the dance...
That's our trade policy.

3. Hmmm. That won't make him popular with the Big Dog.
And I wonder how much 'king maker' power Clinton has?? I would think, considerable.

4. I'm not sure he's credible on trade
he wasn't in the Senate for NAFTA, and he voted in favor of China and the WTO. I really don't think he's a credible anti-NAFTA any more than Dean is.

Unless I'm wrong. Is there any evidence he would have voted against NAFTA, or that he has been significantly anti-NAFTA, aside from in his recent campaign rhetoric?

8. He said his opposition to NAFTA was part of his 1998 campaign
and it helped him win. However, I was not following him at that time and don't have any confirmation. Maybe someone else does.

9. he's not going to use the same approach against Bush.
He has no reason to refrain from negative comments there; against fellow Democrats, it is not a good strategy. But against the Republicans, he is freer to raise different issues.

For his positions on all the issues, and some creative proposals, go to johnedwards2004.com. He chooses not to play the role of policy wonk in his speeches, learning from the Gore mistakes. Remember that most people are not interested in politics the way DUers are.

12. The story CNN is reporting is that
Barry Switzer the legendary OK colledge football coach endorsed Edwards and that this accounted for the surge at the end.
