OK, Edwards is using Dean's message (and that's ok) to win...he can
beat Kerry after a few more opportunities to speak to America. Dean deserves all the credit for enabling and inspiring the others to get out there and attack Bush. I could vote for Edwards, holding his Iraq invasion position against him, but I like his message because it is very Dean-Kucinich and I love Kucinich.

Should Edwards win, who would be a good running mate?
Should Kerry win, who would be a good running mate?
Should Dean win, who would be a good running mate?

After tonight look for Edward's "electability" ratings to rise sharply after tonight. Dean has the message, Kucinich has the message and the guts and the heart, Edward's has the "Clinton appeal." Kerry is just more of the same inside Washington establishment Dem. I would rather not have him as our candidate. Give Edwards time. Because he is so close to Dean's message...look for Kucinich and Dean supporters to go his way.

IMHO

1. What is this "Dean message" of which you speak?
Just curious...Edwards has not gotten as much media attention as the others...but he isn't saying anything now that he hasn't been saying since the campaign started.

3. "You and I can change America."
...and "I believe in you."

Dean's message, is "You have the power!"

John Edwards softened it up a little bit.

2. What?!?
Edwards is using his own message. It's been his message for a year now. Weird primary.

4. Once and for all, let's get this straight: Dean did NOT patent...

the populist lexicon. I am proud that ALL of our candidates are taking back the voice that Reagan stole from us in 1980.

5. Bullshit -- I listened to plenty of Dean's speeches
Dean's "message," to the extent he had one, consisted of:

(1) Democrats need to stand up to Bush.
(2) Bush's war in Iraq hasn't made us safer.
(3) You can't trust Republicans with your money.
(4) What middle class tax cut?
(5) You have the power.

Even on his best days, Dean's stump speech was never as effective and coherent as Edward's is. And one reason is because of who Edwards is. Edwards is the son of a South Carolina miller worker. He worked his way through college. He earned a living taking on big corporations and insurance companies. Howard couldn't give the kind of speech Edwards gives.

6. Edwards "I believe in you" = Dean "You have the power."
Edited on Tue Feb-03-04 09:45 PM by Eric J in MN
I'm not saying that Howard Dean has the exclusive right to pump up his supporters, just that I doubt Edwards would have the "I believe in you" line if Dean didn't first have "You have the power" line.

8. Is that the best you can do?
Sorry, but the substance of the speeches are different. Edwards is a blue coller populist. Dean is a white coller populist.

10. Edwards is a successful trial lawyer: white collar to me.
Again, any ideas about running mates for the potential candidates?

12. I like Edwards/Gephardt
If you're going the populist route, you may as well go all the way. All Gephardt needs to do is bring the Teamsters on board and spend his time campaigning in Missouri, Oklahoma and West Virginia. Leave the South to Edwards.

DEMOCRATS OWE HOWARD DEAN A LARGE DEBT
by Mark Shields

JANUARY 24-25, 2004

<snip>

His opponents for the Democratic nomination are indebted to Howard Dean for making them better and sharper candidates. Doctor Dean nearly performed a vertebrae transplant on his rivals, with challenges like, "Most importantly, I want my party to stand up for what we believe in again," and, "The deal I'm going to make you is this: If you make me the Democratic nominee, I'll make you proud to be Democrats again," and, "If you're going to defend the president's tax cuts and if you're going to defend the president's war, I frankly don't think we can beat George Bush by being Bush Lite."

For millions of Democrats dispirited by their party's fear in the 2002 campaign at being branded by Bush as "soft on terrorism," Howard Dean gave them hope that they were not alone.

It was Dean, according to my notes, who condemned "companies (that) are leaving the country to avoid paying taxes or to avoid paying people livable wages. And corporations are doing this with the support of the government and a political process in Washington they rent -- if not own." Sound familiar?

And after terminal constituency-coddling from countless Democratic candidates, it was refreshing, at last, to hear a leader challenge people to make an "America where it's not enough for me to want health care for my family but the obligation of every one of us as American citizens to ensure that each one of us has health care for our families." It's not just "Are YOU better off than you were four years ago," but instead, "Are WE better off -- are the strong more just and the weak more secure -- than we were four years ago?"

<snip>
