Kerry Wins Big; Edwards, Clark Stay Alive
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20040204/us_nm/campaign_dc&cid=1896&ncid=2043

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic front-runner John Kerry (news - web sites) took a huge stride toward the presidential nomination on Tuesday with wins in five states, but victories by John Edwards (news - web sites) and Wesley Clark (news - web sites) kept the race alive.

Kerry, riding a big wave of momentum since back-to-back wins in the first two contests last month, won in Missouri, Arizona, Delaware, North Dakota and New Mexico as seven states voted on the biggest day yet in the race to find a challenger to President Bush (news - web sites).

But Edwards, a senator from North Carolina, and Clark, a retired general, scored wins in South Carolina and Oklahoma, respectively, to keep the race alive and put a temporary dent in Kerry's momentum.

Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman, the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2000, was shut out on Tuesday and pulled out of the race, saying "the judgment of the voters is now clear."

2. Its over.
Kerry's the nominee.

The only candidate with a chance was Edwards, and he lost Oklahoma. I think that pretty much knocked him out too.

The only question that remains now is who will be Kerry's running mate. Does he look south and go with Edwards, or to Florida and pick Graham, or pick Gephardt and go for the industrial states?

At this point, I'd say its even chance between Kerry/Gephardt or Kerry/Edwards.

Whatever the ticket, it definitely will be a strong one. Kerry should be an excellent candidate, and have a good chance to win.

3. You know, you Dean supporters with your "resistance is futile" nonsense
can really get under my skin at times.

Oh, wait.

You're talking about Kerry, the Anointed One.

There are a lot of voters still to be heard from, my friend. Don't crack opent the champagne just yet.

4. If you could look over my past posts, you would see that I had...
...high hopes for Clark too. I felt that his Military resume together with being a southern moderate would make for a formidable candidate. But it just wasn't to be. He just barely beat Edwards for Oklahoma tonight - and did poorly elsewhere. He did good enough to go forward, but not good enough, I don't think, to create much interest in his campaign or to keep money coming in. All the money is gonna go pouring into the Kerry campaign now. You'll see.

I think Clark was treated unfairly by the media, and I think dems put too much into him not being a 'real democrat'. But thats the way it is. The people have spoken, imo. Maybe Sec of Defense?

5. Without North Dakota's delegate count (not available yet)
Kerry has more than doubled his delegates, picking up 119 tonight, Dont know how many more were available frm N.D.)

Only Kerry and Edwards picked up delegates in Missouri.

Only Kerry and Sharpton picked up delegates in Delaware.

Kerry picked up

N.M. 10
Ariz. 30
Del 14
Mo 36
OK 12
S.C. 17

Total of 119

This still leaves out North Dakota, who havnt listed the delegates won yet. North Dakota has 22 delegates, and Kerry came in with 50 percent of the vote so this should mean 11 delegates.

Only Clark won enough votes to earn delegates with 24 percent of the total vote, that should then get him 5 or 6 delegates.

Everyone else got less than the requied 15 percent of votes needed to earn delegates.

Which sould bring Kerry's delegates from tonight at a total of 130 for tonight, giving him a total of 245 from nine states.

Not too bad for one night.

8. Delaware here!
"Delaware has earned the reputation as a bellwether in the November election, having picked at least the winner of the popular vote in every election since 1948. Whether that holds true for primaries remains to be seen."
