Just a few days ago, they started celebrating. First of all, the news came that Karl Rove was not going to be indicted. Break out the bubbly! Then Zarqawi, the most ruthless of all al Qaeda was killed after we dropped two 500-lb bombs on his vacation home. More bubbly! Then George Jr made a trip in secret to Baghdad to thank the troops and to show the world how brave he was and to try and bring up his poll numbers. Pouring bubbly on each other's heads and high-fivin'...
The first question was how much the Repubs would be helped with Rove back in the saddle, without an indictment hanging over his head. Then Zarqawi was killed and his picture was spread all over the American media, Geneva Convention be damned. Surely the polls would go up with this news. But, just to be sure, Dubya would fly into Baghdad on a sneak run - he wouldn't even tell Laura.
The Republicans in Congress were floating on air. They were feeling so good that they decided to have ten hours of debate on a non-binding resolution. Most likely, Karl had a heart-to-heart talk with them - either they get behind and support the President and his policies in Iraq or they would risk defeat in November. He must have warned them about leaving the reservation, and how that was a sure way to lose, because they all fell into line like good little soldiers to support the ill-advised and failed mission in Iraq.
But, just a few days later, after all the adulation and prognostications by the M$M, we find that Herr Bush's numbers have barely moved. FOX News and the Republican Party must be very disappointed today. Not only that, violence has spread like wildfire thru the suburbs of Baghdad. A new person has already been named to replace the irreplaceable Zarqawi - or so they say? The champagne bottles are still sitting around half-full or half-empty, depending on your perspective. There are no bubbles left.
