Jeff Greefield (CNN) says Dean not "Toast." He can make a case in
Wisconsin which has a long record of supporting liberal Democrats that he is in the tradition of Feingold and others who have been popular independent Democrats and he could go on to "Super Tuesday" making the case that small states have been frontloaded to elect the "frontrunner" and so why not "look at me who will give you a voice and stand up for your interests instead of letting these small states decide who your candidate is." (paraphrase...because I was making dinner.)

Nice report for Dean. (although I understand it's more "fun" for CNN to keep the horse race going, at this point). Still there's some good advice there.

1. The 1968 primary gave Wisconsin a reputation as a maverick, liberal state
Edited on Wed Feb-04-04 05:45 PM by bigtree
The 1968 primary gave Wisconsin a reputation as a maverick, liberal state when it came to Democratic presidential primary voting. At least one candidate this year, Dean, is hoping that Wisconsin will resurrect his anti-establishment candidacy, which stumbled badly in Iowa and has yet to recover.

Dean has declared this year's Wisconsin primary to be "absolutely essential" to his candidacy. He says he will be "practically living" in the state until primary day, campaigning hard for an upset victory over frontrunner Kerry.

But Dean should know that the state's reputation for backing insurgents is a shaky one. "Wisconsin is not a niche state and doesn't vote for niche candidates," says John Kraus, a veteran Democratic pol who this year is organizing the state for John Edwards. "Wisconsin likes candidates who make an appeal that is broad, and who can convince Democrats that they can compete in November."

"Wisconsin does not always pick the maverick," says Gov. Jim Doyle. "I think Wisconsin Democratic primary voters take the primary very seriously, and they try to go with someone that they think can win the nomination and the election. A lot of times, that's a more mainstream, moderate candidate.

3. Corp Media Continues to Boost Dean and Minimize Kerry's Efforts

Even now the Media does not give Kerry the direct coverage
they used to give to Dean when he was the "front runner."

6. That might be true
but unfortunately all of Dean's coverage was negative so be thankful they aren't doing that to Kerry.

7. The media bash of Dean continues to today.
How many reports have used the word "imploded" to describe the Dean campaign. Virtually every pundit, with the exception of Greenfield has written off Dean at this point.

The news is all Kerry, all the time. They're even christening him with the mantle of "Presumptive Nominee" with only 9 states having voted.

Maybe on Mars the coverage isn't about Kerry. Here on earth, that's all we hear.

9. I did a double take on that one
Boost Dean?!

Instructions from ????? to Media:

Step 1: Report Dean = "angry" / Kerry = "electability"

Step 2: Repeat Step 1

I'm hoping Feingold will endorse Dean and help Dean win Wisconsin.

8. How nice!
This is the first I've heard on the news recently that Dean still has a chance. Although I haven't been watching it as much, because I'll I'm hearing is "Dean is finished, Dean has no chance, Dean should drop out bla, bla bla..."

Thanks for posting this ! :)

12. Yes, it was a very positive analysis (for all those who are mad
at the "media")

Also, this coming right after Crossfire when someone from the audience asked them whether Dean was done and even Begala replied "three words: his to ry."

13. Not sure Wisconsin as progressive as it once was, more's the pity
-don't forget they kept electing Tommy Thompson over and over. Without Madison and maybe sections of Milwaukee I don't think they would be considered very liberal at all. Keepin' my fingers crossed, 'though.

15. It's too hard to ascertain the literal truth during election season
without looking under rocks for yourself. Today, I went looking for the actual delegate count following last night's elections. Kerry is approximately 122 votes ahead of Dean. Kerry leads, Dean is second and the rest follow. Approximately 7 percent of American voters have voted.

Kerry is taking is page from Bush*s playbook. Kerry's nomination is inevitable. His goal is to keep Clark in the race to continue to deflect support from Dean. Clark was deployed by the Clinton's to StopDean and that's exactly what he is doing. He doesn't have to win -- he just has to stay in long enough to deprive Dean from enough votes long enough for Kerry to get the nomination.

Anything can happen in politics at any time. It's too soon to tell what will happen to Dean.

16. If he has enough money or can get it.....I think he will stay to the
Convention. Even if they try to push him to drop out... It's the money, but then Kucinich hasn't had much money and has hung in. If you do it on the cheap just to keep a presence it's possible to keep at it. It's up to him and the grassroots supporters. Even without a win, he will have kept at it to make a difference.
