Is this a victory speech?

Now I want to take just a moment on this night of extraordinary celebration of a great political victory, to talk just for a moment about the millions of Americans who will not go home, go to bed, and celebrate tonight. The millions of Americans who struggle every single day just to provide for their own families. Tonight, tonight, somewhere in America, a ten-year-old little girl will go to bed hungry, hoping and praying that tomorrow will not be as cold as today because she doesn't have the coat to keep her warm, hoping and praying that she doesn't get sick as she did last year because it means 24 hours waiting in an emergency room trying to get medical care, hoping.

Hoping that her father, who lost his job when the factory closed and has not been able to find steady work, will actually get a job that allows him to provide for his family. She's one of 35 million Americans who live in poverty every single day, unnoticed, unheard. Well, tonight, we see her, we hear her, we embrace her. She is part of our family!

And we will lift her up.

And she is, and her family is, like millions of Americans that work hard every day, struggle to get by. These are the Americans no one pays attention to. They're unheralded, they're unnoticed. The truth of the matter is this -- they are heroes in our America. They are the reason I'm running for president of the United States. And the message I want you and I to send loud and clear to all those millions of Americans, tonight we see them, tonight we hear them, we believe in them, we will lift them up, we will give them hope, and we will give them back the White House.

Can you imagine putting this in a victory speech? What kind of politician spends most of his speech on poverty after a tremendous victory? These people don't vote, don't donate, and don't lobby, but he speaks to them every chance he gets.

This is why I believe this man must be in the White House.

1. I believe Edwards would be a very good President. So would Kerry
Dean, and all the others.

2. CLASS ACT
THat's why I like him. BTW, about not voting. A lot of the rural poor do vote. Just not for the right party......

That's about to change.

3. If Edwards was so concerned about the poor,
maybe he'd donate some of the money he spends on multimillion dollar homes to programs that would help the poor.

He's trying to boost his "he cares about people like me" rating.

7. Here is one place his money goes:
http://www.wade.org/

...I don't know what other charity organizations he supports, but if you saw his interview with O'Reilly and their debate about progressive taxes, I think you'll quickly see that it is not an act.

I believe in him. I hope someday you will too.

15. Well my word...
I'm surprised at the cynicism.

He has. Several afterschool programs, a playground, a library I think. They've done alot for the poor in their area. There's nothing phony about John and Elizabeth Edwards.

5. They don't vote?
That is hogwash. People that have lost their jobs will be voting.

8. people living in poverty have one of the lowest voter turnout
of any demographic.

I think that his speach was a class act. It focused on the issue that HE has brought to the front and even the current frontrunner is picking up on it.

We have a moral responsibility to lift those living in poverty up!

11. This speech was outstanding.
I came here to the DU boards last night and commented on the exact same thing.

Maybe I'm a sap, but after 4 years of GWB's mis-Administration, greed, war-mongering, deceit and corruption, I actually got choked up listening to Edward's SC victory speech. He is a very, very eloquent speaker.

Say what you will about the Big Dog, but his SOTU speeches used to get to me as well on that emotional level. And that's how I knew I liked him and he was genuinely a good guy.
