AUGUSTA — Maine's Democratic caucuses are scheduled for Sunday, but 2,557 members of the party already have voted, party Chairwoman Dottie Melanson said Wednesday - the last day people could cast absentee ballots.
This is the first time people have been permitted to cast absentee ballots in Democratic caucuses in Maine.

Melanson said she expects 12,000 to 15,000 people to attend caucuses Sunday, but she noted that "in the whole country, expectations of turnout have been far exceeded."

I think this has been a good first step for Maine. I know a lot of people who have voted this way. It doesn't preclude them from taking part in the caucus on Sunday. (We'll just invalidate the absentee and the person votes normally at the event.) The weather can be iffy so it's a way to get your vote in.
