How much of an effect does R votes in open primaries have?

A Republican from Wisconsin told me that there are "a ton" of Republicans that are going to vote for Dean in Wisconsin because they have an open primary there and are not required to be a registered democrat to vote in the primary.

How much of an effect do you think stunts like this have in the overall numbers? Why do some state continue to have open primaries? I don't get it. I don't think either party would want it that way because either party could pull stunts like this (voting for the person you want your candidate to run against).

It's cold up here in 'Sconnie. If they come out to vote in a Dem primary, then they've got wy too much time on their hands.

I think it's mostly Dems voting. However, there is a Milwaukee mayoral primary as well (I think), but Milwaukee leans more to the left. The Pugs live in the suburbs.
