Bush & Vietnam: Live Ammo?
CBS) CBSNews.com's Jarrett Murphy analyzes the political flap over the president's military record.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

President Bush' record of military service has come under attack by prominent Democrats — the fifth time in as many presidential campaigns that a candidate's experience during the Vietnam war has been made an issue.

What's unclear is whether it will work this time. Candidates accused of shirking their military duties have consistently won in recent history.

The Vietnam issue began generating headlines last month when filmmaker Michael Moore, a Clark supporter, called Mr. Bush a "deserter." It erupted again when Democratic National Committee chairman Terry McAuliffe said Sunday on ABC that he looked forward to a debate between decorated veteran John Kerry and the president, "a man who was AWOL."

"George Bush never served in our military in our country. He didn't show up when he should have showed up," McAuliffe said.

1. This neutralizes Bush's only issue.
It can be overplayed, but we would be retarded not to use this. Bush's service record is practically a gift from God.

2. McAuliffe's statement is a bit over the top
To say George Bush never served in our military in our country is untrue, since the NG is most certainly military.

3. Accuracy
It would be helpful. No need to go one step further with this, the facts are damaging enough. They ought to play up his disciplinary actions as well. You'd think with all these lawyers in our party, they'd understand the importance of sticking with facts a little better!

4. "Shirking their military duties" and going AWOL
from military commitments aren't remotely the same thing. I wish those clowns would get it right.

6. Michael Moore would have dodged the draft!
As would most of the DUers if they had to go fight in an immoral war like Vietnam.

Democrats can be as hypocritical as the Republicans!

Vietnam was bad! Iraq is bad!

I will oppose the draft for Iraq, as I opposed the draft for Vietnam.

No one should be forced to go to war!
