Is Dean out after Wisconsin if he doesn't win or is it a fundraising ploy?
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/02/05/politics/campaign/05CND-DEAN.html?hp

This morning, after a sparsely attended town-hall session here at the local campus of the University of Michigan, Dr. Dean brushed off questions of whether his e-mail indicated a change in strategy, or was simply a fundraising ploy.

"We plan to win Wisconsin," he said as he got in a minivan to leave. "That's what we plan to do."

10. In the email I got, it never said he would quit
That is everyone else's interpretation of it.

14. Could you please post the email, so we can interpret for ourselves?
Thank you.

17. Dean's Email

Dear Supporter,

The entire race has come down to this: we must win Wisconsin. We must launch our new television advertisement on Monday in the major markets in Wisconsin. To do that, I need your help to raise $700,000 by Sunday. Please contribute today so that we can reserve the air time:

http://www.deanforamerica.com/wisconsinad

We will get a boost this weekend in Washington, Michigan and Maine, but our true test will be the Wisconsin primary. A win there will carry us to the big states of March 2-and narrow the field to two candidates. Anything less will put us out of this race.

All that you have worked for these past months is on the line on a single day, in a single state. We have come so far to change our political process and restore our democracy-we can't stop now. Your contribution will allow us to get out our message onto the airwaves, and win Wisconsin.

Thank you,

Governor Howard Dean, M.D.

As you can see, everyone is interpretting Anything less will put us out of this race as "I will quit" which is most likely, but it is not a promise to quit. He may continue in order to reap a certain level of delegates or continue until he has negotiated certain concessions from frontrunners.

19. It reads like Dean knows he is fighting a lost cause, but he didn't
say he would quit if he doesn't win WI.

3. HE may not give up
but he is out after wisconsin without a win...whether he really thinks so or not....his staffers who I know have had their resumes out for weeks.

6. Dean staff seeking jobs for weeks?
How many weeks? Say, since before Iowa? after Iowa before NHampshire?
After New Hampshire?

I can understand looking for a new job if you see the company is bankrupt, particularly if the boss can't give you a paycheck and you can't pay the rent.

But, I wonder, when did your "friends" decide to start lowering the life boats?

9. Gossip is only meant to hurt another.
Why is it that people find such satisfaction from bringing down another even if it has no value or merit?

Dean is a dedicated democrat. He deserve our respect. Remember, *bush will probably win and thats the real enemy, not Dean.

18. Im not pulling Dean down.
I hope he does win in Wisc. Maine and Michigan. He has energized the party, brought in new support, mobilized young voters, given voice to legitimate anger and made the other candidates have to step up and take a stand.

Dean is good for the party and good for the nation no matter who wins the nomination. I want him to win this week and remain relevant.

As to the staffers...they had been saying for about 2 months that joe trippi was the wrong guy. joe trippi did a great job in getting the campaign on the map, but he was the wrong guy for the next steps and had they given him the ax 2 months ago the general feeling is that Dean could have won iowa. The ads were shoddy, poor quality. The organization to get the message out was just not there. Staffers knew it and they knew that when trippi eventually got the ax a lot of them would be gone too. Thats why the resumes were out weeks ago. With the new campaign manager, I hope it is not too late for dean to make a run. go dean - be like the 2000 lakers in game 7 western conference finals against portland.

5. I'm from wisconsin,
and I'll admit - people from Wisconsin don't think like the rest of the political world.

We have a long history of "different" politics. Gov. Bob LaFollette waged a successful fight for the progressive party in the early 20th centruy. Senator Russ Feingold is certainly unique in his foresight and principles.

Wisconsin voters don't necessarily like the mainstream democrat, even though they've gone for the Democratic candidate in what... 4 of the last 5 elections?

It's a good place for Dean to mount some kind of offense (or defense?)?

11. Yeah and Dean slapped Fiengold's camp. fin. reform in the face
I am wondering just how well that plays with the local dems who feel Russ is the best thing since brats and beer were united to form the Milwaukee survival kit.

13. The $77 average contribution smooths that over, I would think.
It would be a true slap if he were banking the fat-cat $2000 checks & the big PAC dollars.

8. This is all conjecture. He could win and still drop out
Edited on Thu Feb-05-04 02:58 PM by NNN0LHI
He has bills to pay just like all of the candidates do. Lieberman stayed in just long enough to collect some more dough before dropping out to pay some bills. This is the way it works.

12. its a ploy
Dean will not win WI. But why Dean would then drop out with super tuesday less than two weeks away is beyond me. I would be happy if he does but I'll believe it when I see it.

It looks like SEIU and the other two biggies that backed him have given him a deadline of Wisconsin before they pull their support.

20. Locking.....
8. If you make a factual assertion about a candidate that is not generally accepted to be true, you must provide a link to a reputable source to back up your claim. Allegedly "innocent" questions which are actually an underhanded effort to spread rumors are not allowed. If you really need to know the answer to your question, try Google.
