You have to admit, we're not the only people thinking this.

Strangely though, (speaking from a guy's perspective) I think this makes him even more attractive to the average female voter, who would probably feel he doesn't care about looks. It makes him more 'accessible'. If Edwards' wife was was 'on his level' in terms of looks (i.e. the 'barbie' to his 'ken') it would probably hurt him with female voters.
