Warning - Rove/GOP has fake Veterans Against Kerry website up
Edited on Thu Feb-05-04 08:36 PM by papau

National Review and the rest of the right wing have been running since 1/24/04 with the idea of a Veterans Against Kerry and now have a website up that starts with VVAW activities and then tries to sell a series of lies about later events.

Perhaps it should be called "MakeBelieveVeteransSuckingUpToTheDeserter" - but in any case it is run by the fellow that has hated Kerry since the POW/MIA
hearings - namely Ted Sampley. Given the pick up by the right wing media of Samply's lies, I would guess this is another Scafie - planting info for the media - site. Sampley, like Scafie and Fox Cable News, has never been one to let truth stand in his way, taking statements out of context to make them fit his own view.

In any case the site features Kerry's 1971 Vietnam anti war book called "New Soldier" which had a flag upside down to indicate distress on the original cover. Todays right wing descriptions of the meaning of the cover are off the wall - indeed after reading them, I think I need to take a shower.

John's a little younger than I, but he is one of my heros - for what he did in the war - and what he did after the war. There is nothing to be worried about re this book - despite the attempt by the right to make John look bad, while they try to make AWOL a "hero".

The 1971 book cover is below - courtesy of Newsmax. Man - it is time for a shower.

1. A question. How do we know it's "fake"?
I mean, mightn't there be veterans who don't like Kerry, or isn't that allowed?

11. sure, that's not only possible
it's likely. What McCain and Kerry did in their investigations about there possibly being POW/MIA Americans still in Vietnam left many folks with a very bad taste, believing that those two men's only goal was re-opening relations with that country. They believe that the two of them ignored (somewhat tinfoil hat type) evidence that there were still men alive in Vietnam.

Additionally, there are probably some who hated the VVAW group.

16. He despises Bush I too
Bush's Betrayal

Chester Mierzejewski, an old war buddy of Bush, who said he was angered by the "false assertions" made by candidate Bush when describing the incident, gave a different account.

After 44 years of silence, Mierzejewski, who also was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, told the New York Post that Bush had abandoned his crew to death when there was another choice.

He said he was approximately 100 feet in front of Bush's plane as the turret gunner for Squadron Commander Douglas Melvin's plane, "so close he could see in the cockpit" of Bush's bomber. Mierzejewski's close wartime buddy was one of the two crew members in Bush's plane.

According to Mierzejewski, the squadron was in a tight-formation bombing raid against a Japanese radio installation on an island reported to be heavily fortified. He saw "a puff of smoke" come from Bush's plane which quickly disappeared and was certain only one man parachuted from the plane and that it was Bush, the pilot.

4. It isn't a fake. Ted Sampley and Kerry have been butting heads forever
However, I will not discount the possibility that Ted will become one of Rove's weapons against Kerry.

There are in fact veterans who oppose Kerry, for reasons of their own. A web site against Kerry isn't necessarily a Rove plant.

5. There are a great number of veterans that didn't take kindly to Kerry and
his protesting the war. In fact it could be close to a majority.

12. Could
"It could be close to a majority"

It *could* be a lot of things. Do you have any rational reason for thinking that it might even be CLOSE to a majority?

7. OK - perhaps not a "fake" website - but I've met 1000's of vets for Kerry
and none against.

And I do not like Ted. And if anyone wants to get to his site try google 'cuz I'm not posting the link!

peace

:-)

8. There's going to be a lot more of this and other smears
should Kerry get the nomination.

I find him unelectable for that reason, and I think we're fools to nominate him.

9. I heard that it was from the same guy with the anti-Clinton museum in AR
The same guy who wanted to put a Clinton-hating museum in Little Rock. I may be making this up, but it wouldn't suprise me.

10. As An Undecided Primary Voter, I Love The Footage Of Kerry...
from the 70's when he is testifying against the war.

The repukes make a huge mistake if they are going to use things like this. Most Americans are conflicted about VietNam. Surely the Vets deserve a better deal than they've gotten, but also I think the majority feel the war was a mistake.

Kerry gets points for his service in VietNam and his criticism of it as well. I can't imagine "W"(imp) having the guts to do either.

13. Psssst...they're most likely real veterans who don't like Kerry.
Such things DO exist. Dismissing it as a GOP attack is short-sighted, in my opinion. If Kerry's the nominee, this is something that we'll have to deal with.
