5. This is the best part
"I think he's run the country into the ground economically, and he comes out with these crazy ideas like going to Mars and going to the moon," said Richard Bidlack, a 78-year-old retiree from Boonton, N.J., who says he voted for Bush in 2000. "I'm so upset at Bush, I'll vote for a chimpanzee before I vote for him."

Bush can't afford to lose 1/10 of his support from 2000. His problem is you are hearing alot of people like this who voted for him (including my Dad) saying they wont vote for him again.

6. Keep up the fight
don't let them catch us off-guard. Bush works best when he's underestimated. Keep fighting like it's a year ago.

9. I think it's inevitable. I and several others here were predicting...

...approval ratinge below 50% by last fall, with around 40% by now. Obviously, we overshot a little, but it's happening.

A few marginally good economic numbers in the fall probably caused his numbers to level off for a bit, then the capture of Hussein gave him a very slight bump (for all of a week or two). Then the inevitable decline continued.

I say "inevitable" because one quick look at Bush's approval numbers through his term show that, ever since 9-11, he's been in a nearly constant state of decline (with a significant bump after we invaded Iraq, which I can only attribute to the wartime "pulling together" effect). The Pollkatz site displays this decline well (see below). Pollkatz hasn't updated the site since 12-29, but the last bump you see corresponds to the capture of Hussein, and that bump is already toast.

You can mentally add to this graphic several polls in the low 50s, followed by four major national polls in a row with approval ratings below 50%.

13. You guys need to get some perspective
The words "tank" and 47% don't belong in the same sentence.

At his lowest point, Harry Truman had an approval rating in the low 20s. Now THAT'S tanking.

And need I remind everyone about where Gray Davis' approval ratings were during the recall?

Sorry to wake you from your dream, but a 47% rating does not reflect a "throw the bums out" mentality, which is what the Democrats will need if they nominate someone like Kerry.

14. "Tank" refers to where he was after 9/11, about 90%.
He's nowhere as low as he deserves to be, but the numbers are definitely heading in the right direction.
