It is the only way we can win or whatever term is in vogue this week.
It will require bringing back the draft. I remember the draft. Very well I remember it. We used to go with each other to see our boyfriends off to Vietnam. It was too hard to go alone. Even the ones who could get college deferments were made to feel unpatriotic if they did use them.
It was a bad time. I remember sitting in the church here for one funeral after another. One of the local judges and his wife had a son late in life, and I sat near them at the funeral. He was their only son, and it was a useless war he died in. It nearly destroyed them.
Killing, destruction, and the draft. That is what it will take to "win" or whatever the latest term is.
We are not going to give them western style democracy, ever. They are not going to let us do that in the middle east. It will always have to be at the point of a gun.
"I've seen this before in my life. This is the same situation we had in Vietnam. Everybody then kept saying, 'just another year, just stay the course, we'll have a victory.' Well, we didn't have a victory, and this policy cost the lives of an additional 25,000 troops because we were too stubborn to recognize what was happening." Howard Dean, San Antonio, December 2005
