Karl Rove apparently got his hands on a super-duper electrical engineer and hired him to brighten up Bush`s attention grabbing pit stops. Who is this guy and how does he make those halos? How does he get the light to shine just right on the faces of the adoring crowds? How does he make the flags in the background look like they`re awash in sunshine from my own back yard? Makes me want to say, "USA, USA" and connect it with all that`s pure and good.
I started thinking about this electrical guy after I saw Bush emerge from that beautiful pale blue haze in Jackson Square, each step softened with a ray of hope. It was almost like seeing God appear from behind fluffy clouds after a natural disater....like Bush in his plane looking down on the suffering, just in time to show he cares.
The Iraq War gets this same treatment. Bush`s "bringin` freedom" words settle down on the audience at the exact time a light shines on an old warrior`s medals or on the animated eagerness of a recruit fresh out of basic training. Viewers get to choose between their lying eyes or the Nazi appeasers gathered outside. And, if there are still any questions at the end of the speech, the media will highlight the big points and throw in some action graphics with attention to the *be afraid* part. It all works like a Steven Spielberg movie and we don`t even have to pay for the tickets.
If reality can be twisted with words on a backdrop or a set of lights in a dark disaster, I`m going to start worrying. If that electrical guy is absent when the caskets come home or when the torture planes land, I`m thinking I may not have the complete picture. But, could this be a new reality show we`re watching? Maybe in real life we are at peace and enjoying prosperity.
