(CNSNews.com) - According to a new labor union study, voters will care more about their pocketbooks than the war in Iraq or terrorism come November. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers believes the finding is a sign that more Democrats will be elected.
"Voters are looking at this election through the prism of their pocketbooks," said Tom Buffenbarger, president of the Machinists Union, a division of the AFL-CIO, at a news conference in Washington, D.C. on Friday.
"As we head into this Labor Day weekend, what labor wants is very clear. Labor wants more jobs, tougher utility regulation, lower insurance premiums, shorter daily commutes and more educational equity," Buffenbarger said. "People are hurting, and we need to do something to answer that pain.
"2006 is all about money, more so than war and terrorism," Buffenbarger added.
According to the poll, conducted by Fingerhut Associates, Democrats had a 20 to 30 point advantage on the five issues being touted by the union. Republicans maintained equal advantages over Democrats on national security, the war in Iraq and combating terrorism.
The telephone survey polled 632 likely voters in Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin in August.
