Talent pulls even with McCaskill in Senate race
By Jo Mannies
POST-DISPATCH POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT
09/02/2006

Claire McCaskill and Jim Talent

U.S. Sen. Jim Talent's deluge of ad spending apparently has paid off.

The latest Research 2000 poll for the Post-Dispatch and KMOV-TV (Channel 4) found that Talent, R-Mo., has chipped away the edge held by his Democratic rival, state Auditor Claire McCaskill.

With a little more than two months left before Election Day, the two are in a statistical dead heat.

The Maryland-based firm's latest poll of 800 likely voters, conducted Monday through Thursday, found that 47 percent backed McCaskill and 46 percent supported Talent. Two percent supported Libertarian Frank Gilmour, while the remaining 5 percent were undecided.

1. What is the margin of cheating.
This is to close for Clair to win. When it is this close, diebold declares the winner.

2. The good news
is that Talent is well under 50% at Labor Day. Not a good place for an incumbent to be at all.

3. They have a mixture of machines in Missouri,
...including touchscreens. They're not entirely voting on touchscreens.

5. As a Missourian I hate to say it but Talent will pull it out.

I actually didn't realize the polling was this close. This state has changed a lot in the last few years. In 04 it was the gay marriage ban and this fall its going to be the stem cell vote. The fundies will once again come out and vote against stem cells and put a check next to Talents name while they are there.

Talent is almost bad as Bond who forgets were MO even is except for 2 months prior to election but someone the prick will pull it off.

6. The stem cell initiative
is a wedge issue that works in OUR favor.

Sure the fundies will come out to vote against it. But, unlike the gay marriage initiative, which was sponsored by the right, the stem cell initiative, sponsored by our side, will draw many middle of the roaders and people on the left to vote for it. It's a very motivating issue for a lot of people who have family members with diseases, etc.

The stem cell initiative on the MO ballot helps McCaskill enormously. It energizes our base this time.

7. I sure hope it does.
I know I will be voting for it, but I guess this poll just really surprises me. I mean Talent has done NOTHING for Missouri expect rubber stamp everything Bush has wanted to get passed through, privatize SS, wack PBS budget etc. I am amazed he is polling this close.

8. Social Security privatization
Is another thing that McCaskill should be talking about against Talent.

10. Well at least we have a Dem SoS!
Claire is really smart. She is going to take Talent apart on MTP in October. Bill Clinton's going to rally for her this week.
