Shocking quote from Bush speaking at a Corker for Senate event in TN
I was floored when I saw him say this on TV:

"I believe government has an obligation to open its coffers for competitive bidding to faith-based and community-based groups in order to make sure America -- America's souls are saved one person at a time."

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2006/08/20060830-7.html

What!? It's the government's job to save souls (i.e., convert people to Christianity)!? Wow. Apparantly, I must have been out of the loop, because he had said similar statements at least as far back as 2004. I was already upset by faith-based initiatives, but I just didn't know he was so open about that. That's the President of the United States saying that. What the hell is wrong with people?

1. He's talking to his base - it's a fundraiser.
Will say anything to get votes; not a big surprise he'd say this crap.

And Don't Want our money used to try and save US or Anyone else?

:wtf: :wtf: :wtf:
:nuke: :nuke: :nuke:

You're right, though. The 'faith-based' crap is nothing new...but this level of blatant religiousity indicates an uptick in the threat level, IMO.

It seems he lets down his guard at these kinds of events, and just blurts out things that his handlers have probably tried to keep him from saying elsewhere.

Thanks for posting, keithkam!

I took the liberty of forwarding your quote to www.dubyaspeak.com, for their collection. If you find more of those, they'd be glad to get them!

31. I'm glad someone is passing this on
Like I said, I just happened to catch him on TV, but not surprisingly, I haven't heard anything about this in the media. I guess the President of this country saying the government should be in the business of saving souls isn't newsworthy. If I happen to come across more I'll be sure to send it to that site.

How do you think the "religious" right and right-wingers will react when non-Christian religious organizations suddenly apply for and get a big chunk of their tax money?

18. It's a whittling assignment. You begin with ad hoc establishment
You use the federal coffers to prop up the church. Then you move on to defining the absence of established religion as prejudicial, a violation of the Christians' civil rights. Then you drop a few laws in that openly base themselves in Christian theology, rather than secular ethics and good sense. You only need one or two to be upheld by the Supremes to establish case law. A few years down the road, Howard Ahmanson's dream comes true, and no one can figure out how they got there.

16. He used the word "soul" 8 times in his speech...
...reminds me of the old Dana Carvey SNL speech in which Poppy Bush repeatedly uttered the phrase "Operation Desert Storm" in order to receive a standing ovation from the crowd.

I'm a Christian. Bush doesn't speak for me. If he's harvesting souls, it's not for my God.

17. Sounds as crazy as Katherine Harris,
or he couldn't let an opportunity to pander pass him by. Bob Corker's (the person he was there to support) tv ads in the primary blatantly played the Christian card, boasting of his patricipation in a mission trip to Haiti that he read about in the church bulletin while sitting in church one Sunday....blah blah blah.....:puke:
(and I say that as a Baptist who firmly believes in separation of church and state)

33. Not remotely a "faith" issue
The goal is to move 10-15% of the black vote to the R column.
The strategy is to cut government services and then funnel that money to churches. Specifically African-American churches.
The Repubs can create a permanent majority with that shift.
They will point out the "failure" of government (a failure they created) and then dump a truckload of money onto the faith-based initiatives.

They want black ministers to advise their congregation to vote Republican, based on this money move.

Here's a more accurate translation of Bush's remarks:

"I believe government has an obligation to open its coffers for competitive bidding to faith-based groups in order to make sure America's black voters are switched to the Republican Party one person at a time."

I have to double-check on the president's oath of office, because apparently it must say that he swears to "support, defend, and find a way around the Constitution of the United States." I know it's in there somewhere, or else how could that nasty little turd keep doing what he's doing, without getting impeached?
Even though the Republicans wouldn't allow an impeachment to go through, the Dems ought to proceed with the impeachment process, and let the Republicans make their stand, thus showing on the record what a bunch of scumbags they are, so they can be nailed with their own statements in the future!
