Bolton nomination to be considered Thursday

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will consider whether or not to support the nomination of John Bolton to be the US Ambassador to the United Nations this Thursday, according to Elizabeth Alexander, spokeswoman for Sen. Joseph Biden (D-DE), the ranking Democrat on the committee.

Last year, the Republican leadership opted to send the nomination to the Senate floor without a recommendation despite holding a 10-8 majority in the committee.

It remains unclear whether Bolton will meet with more or less success on Thursday. One prominent Republican on the committee who opposed Bolton's nomination the first time around, Sen. George Voinovich (R-OH), said in a recent Washington Post editorial that he had changed his mind.

In response to a question issued at a speech given in late July, Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE)—who sits on the committee and who voted to confirm Bolton in 2005—voiced concerns about Bolton’s leadership and stated that he was unsure how he would vote when the nomination was reviewed: “I want to revisit Mr. Bolton’s performance…The United Nations is a very important institution. I think it is as important today as maybe it’s ever been, and I think America needs to have a standing there. It needs to have relationships there, and it needs to be seen not just as the biggest donor nation, but we need to do more than that…I haven’t decided yet how I’ll vote on Mr. Bolton”

2. Exactly, he was administered mega doses of 1000mg kool aid
...and repeatedly shown ten story high photos of John Bolton running along the shores of the Atlantic with laughing children and told how important a Bolton confirmation is for the republican party and his <Voinovich's> future will be.

Voinovich cried on the Senate floor-Video available here!
Emailer Kim: I'm watching the Bolton debate and Voinovich was crying, I'm talking actual tears here. He's afraid of what Bolton will do to further f**k up our already terrible world image and......he's afraid
that his koolaid sipping fellow republicans will vote for him tomorrow.

Emailer Mc: Pretty powerful moment, came at the end of his speech, right before Dowd's brief moment and Coleman the Chode who is on now. Definitely one of those "holy shit" moments.

Washington - Ohio Sen. George Voinovich choked back tears on the Senate floor Wednesday as he pleaded with colleagues to vote against John Bolton's nomination for United Nations ambassador.

After delaying Bolton's passage through the Senate Foreign Relations Committee this month and sending the entire Senate a letter on Tuesday to explain his objections, Voinovich delivered a 45-minute speech that argued Bolton's abusive personality make him an inappropriate diplomat.

"This appointment is very, very important to our country," Voinovich concluded as his voice cracked with emotion. "At a strategic time when we need friends all over the world, we need somebody up there that's going to be able to get the job done."
