3. Relax. It was just a primary.
She'll be up against Nelson in November.

4. It was only the primary. She beat a couple of obscure Republicans
and therefore will be the Republican Senate candidate, but Nelson will eat her lunch in November.

7. Only the primary
She only won the primary. She coundn't keep any campaign people either the kept quiting.
She also has ties with a corrupt defense contractor. There is no way she will win
the election though.

17. MSNBC said today Dems are staying home until the General..
.. (they didn't explain exactly why).. and Ms. Harris' former political consultant (who was a guest on one of the MSNBC programs) said she's so bat-shit loonie that she'll never win the General.

They said that the other three running on the THUG ticket were nobody's.. and that Cruella won by name-recognition.

The r-THUG Analyst said that he even told Senator Nelson that he couldn't ask for a better opponent! :)

19. She won narrowly in 2002 on Bush's (both George and Jeb) coattails

And she narrowly won in 2004 on Bush's re-election coattails. Her Congressional district is also fairly conservative, yet slightly competitive for Democrats.

If she were running for re-election in FL-13 she would have a tough time.

11. She spent 6 million dollars of her inheritance.
And will probably spend the rest of it during the campaign. Idiot.

21. She didn't even get her $10 million in the first place
Campaign funding pledge continues to haunt Harris

St. Petersburg Times

August 30. 2006 6:01AM

After months of hearing members of even her own party second guess her run for the U.S. Senate, Katherine Harris said she would pump $10 million of her own money into her financially strapped campaign.

In an emotional announcement on national TV in March, Harris said she would use every penny her late father had left her.

Minutes later, while still in the New York studio where she made the announcement, Harris received a call from her sister. She and their brother were furious that she had not told them she was going to spend family money on her campaign, according to her former senior consultant Ed Rollins, who was with her that night.

In the days that followed, several former staffers, including Rollins, said Harris learned she would not directly receive any inheritance from her father. Instead, his assets, reported to be as much as $100 million, were left to her mother, Harriet.

12. The Repubs didn't get behind the other candidates
that's how big a waste of time and money they think running against Nelson would be. But that's no reason for being complancent, Florida!!!

22. Even against Harris, we should not be complacent
I expect her to gain about 10%-15% as some Republicans will come home to roost, simply because she has an "R" next to her name. This race will tighten if we get complacent

13. the r party couldn't talk a heavy weight (or middle weight) into running
Edited on Wed Sep-06-06 08:51 PM by orangepeel68
nobody who thought they had a political future was willing to risk it running in a primary against someone so well known only to likely lose to Nelson in November (he's not unpopular in Florida, despite how people here feel about him).

Only the most active, most intense party members vote in primaries (that's why Lieberman lost and why turnout is something like 20%). The same people vote for Katherine Harris last night as will vote for her in November. Those people only make up a small percentage of general election voters but they make up a large percentage of republican primary voters.

In addition, the anti-Harris vote there was, was split among three other candidates.

15. Maybe Florida has a wicked sense of the absurd? Perhaps the hardened
artery electorate? The Miami Cubano vote? Maybe it was mostly southern Floridian, as in culture, rather than geography, who do not believe in institutionalizing their crazies, but letting them out in the open, with the simple dismissal, "Well, you know she's always been a little odd...but the girl's good as gold, deep down."
