Michael Punke’s book “Fire and Brimstone” tells the story of the 1917 North Butte mining disaster. It also weaves a sociological tale of how workers and their unions were divided by corporate domination of politics and the media in a time of war. Punke says that’s a very modern story for workers and there are lessons there for today’s labor activists.

: "The main thing that I hope is that people from the labor world will look at this book and really view it as a case study in how unions get beat. And in reading that and in looking at the lessons of 1917 I think there's a lot of instructive material there for thinking about the politics of labor unions today."
