Economic Report: Rat Race "Winners" Work More Hours - 09/08/06

The rat race is quickly becoming an arms race of work hours. A recent article in the Washington Post finds that those that are willing to work the most hours tend to make out better when it comes to promotions and raises. The reason, Cornell sociologist Marin E. Clarksburg told the Post, is that we are living in an increasingly intangible world where it is hard to measure worker output. Therefore, it has become more tempting to measure output in terms of work hours - even if it means someone isn’t necessarily more qualified.
