GOP catches Howard Dean sneaking into Columbus, Ohio.
The GOP discovered that Dean was in Columbus yesterday, and they were nearly all over themselves trying to find out why. This paper falls for the spin that apparently he was traveling nearly incognito.

Dean tried to make a stealth visit to Columbus yesterday

"Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean tried to make a stealth visit to Columbus yesterday, but the Ohio Republican Party wouldn’t let him.

The GOP issued a statement bashing Dean — and tipping off reporters that he was here for a trip that had not been announced.

A DNC spokesman said Dean was in Columbus for a few hours for private meetings, and he refused to say with whom or for what purpose.

At first, the only information an Ohio Democratic Party spokesman would provide was that one of the meetings was with an Asian-American group to promote get-out-the-vote efforts."

The cluelessness of that article is evident by paying a simple visit to the Ohio Democratic Party website. It was there in plain site all along.

1. as a former Columbus resident
let me say the Dispatch was not even good enough to line our parrot's cage with. That rag is useless, often incorrect, and decidedly slanted far to the Right.

5. Sounds like they did not exactly welcome him...
wonder if they had a protest? The GOP often has protests against him in various states. But then sometimes they have those stupid scream contests.

Ohio GOP does not welcome Democrats to their state.

:D

Dean is supposed to check in witht the GOP before he goes anywhere? Are they his mommy?

11. Well, actually, I think they do expect that.
The GOP in some red states consider the whole state their own turf, and they especially don't want Dean to come there. They usually post a protest at the GOP website for the state. Some of us followed the subject for a while, but not many ever showed up for the protests.

A few Democrats have fallen for their tactic, and they say disparaging things about Dean so as to appeal to the Republicans. Not as many as before though, though still too often.

32. Yep, and so had some of the timid Dems.
One in TN comes to mind. Said Dean shouldn't go to his state.

He needs to ignore them and go anyway.

7. A startled Dean was beset by reporters when he came out
of his hotel. "What? I'm here visiting a friend in the hospital." Reporters followed his car, which did indeed go to the hospital.

Local GOP leaders were estactic over their victory over Dean.

9. Reporter is claiming to have uncovered this "independently". Pathetic.
"Later in the afternoon, when pressed by a reporter who learned the details of Dean’s visit independently, party spokesman Randy Borntrager acknowledged that the chairman also headlined a $250-ahead fundraiser for the state party. Borntrager did not say how much was raised."

10. So the Dispatch is a house organ of the GOP?
That's certainly the feeling I got from reading their little "exposé" on Dr. Dean's visit to Ohio. But then, considering Ohio's record of Republican corruption and its permeation throughout Ohio, it's not surprising that nobody at the Dispatch has even one Democrat in his or her rolodex so they can pick up the phone and find out anything.

as are most of the other daily newspapers in Ohio. Even the Toledo Blade has been subjected to numerous visits from Rove in the last several months and are caving in.

The event was a sell out of a room of about 200 seating capacity. Per usual, Dean's event was free of frills (chicken and rice) and very workmanlike in terms of the speakers.

The ODP sincerely apologizes to all the GOP hacks and clueless beat reporters for the Dispatch who did not receive raised letter invitations.

I'm a big fan of his. Not only because he's been proven right time and time again (he was way ahad of things about the Iraq War), but he gives the rightwing troglodytes fits.
