A Google bomb is a BAD idea!
Edited on Fri Sep-08-06 12:33 PM by AZBlue
So now we're taking our cues from FOX News?? Oh, come on!

If you do it, you're playing right into their hands. It will make us look foolish and childish and will give them just one more thing to make fun of - it's probably why they made the announcement all along, hoping we'd fall for it. It also seriously erodes the reputation of DU.

I can't believe anyone here would actually play into their hands like that!

Do you have a link to that post? Because no one here yesterday knew what he was talking about - seems strange (and scary) if FOX News knows what's going on here more than DU'ers do.

I sure do loooove me that revisionist history, especially when the subject is no longer around to refute it!

Hammers don't have feelings. Neither do screwdrivers. They won't worry if your behavior towards them is "ethical" or not.

But a hammer over the GOP head is a good thing, and a screwdriver in the Rightwing party ear can be excruciating. If we use GOOGLE to direct fundie children to the real truth about Nine Wun Wun, that is an appropriate use of the tool.

69. I wasn't raging at them at all. They are a TOOL, as I said
They certainly have no cachet of their own. They deserve no particular respect or censure (beyond their chickenshit behavior in CHINA, that is).

Google is a tool that is like a hammer--you can use it to smash open an eggshell of GOP falsehood to reveal an egg yoke of Democratic truth trapped behind the shell.

It exists to make its owners MONEY, and they LOVE it when we use their tool. I owe it no affection, no hate, and no particular loyalty. If it stops doing what I want it to do, I will drop it like a hot potato.

Stop taking this matter so personally. There are people here who are tired of the "Sit down, shut up, and don't piss off Brit Hume or you will be punished" approach. I and others are in this "We've Had Quite ENOUGH" camp.

You aren't, obviously. But you have nothing to fear but fear itself.

In which I urged people to sit through the nauseating piece of crap, outline each and every lie, and continue to fight back after it's been aired to (1) let the ABC's/Disney's of the world know we are onto them and (2) educate our fellow Americans who may have been mislead by the falsifications parading as truth.

Or the ones in which I encouraged DU'ers to write, call, and e-mail Disney and ABC and listed contact information as well as each and every company owned or affiliated with the Disney Corp.

Or the post I tried to put on the ABC blog (they wouldn't post it) in response to the "terrorist lovers" comment.

Or...oh, never mind, I'm sure you're right, I'm just hoping we'll all roll over and take it lying down.:sarcasm:

that they have no interest in differing opinions, while they feel entitled to disseminate pure propaganda.

Yet you think that this action is bad because "it plays into their hands"? How? It's not like Faux News, or their imitators, is going to give us any good press no matter what we do, and at least this has the merit of garnering exposure to a reasonably large audience that otherwise would never hear anything about the protest.

The only bad press is no press.

non-responses over and over, but they don't explain any anything. Yes the GrandOilParty will use it, and if we didn't do it they would use something else, and if there was nothing else they would make it up.

The idea of "not stooping to their level" has resulted in nothing but failure for over 40 years, how much longer will it take for the notion that it doesn't work to sink in?

The bottom line is this:
We are in a war with those that would force us into servitude for their own purposes and they could not care less about the consequences of their crime. They have no mercy, no feelings, and literally don't care if we live or die!

Compromise is only possible when both parties are interested in reaching a mutual understanding, they have shown again and again, that they are not interested in compromise, they are only interested in victory and they will dictate all of the terms.

We are in a no-holds-barred, winner-take-all, war and you had better get about the business of winning, or you will end up as just another casualty that none of them gives two shits about.

15. it's a very bad idea ...
if we don't like what a certain newspaper is printing, should we go to all the newstands and burn them down or steal all the newspapers?

no one has a right to restrict the public's access to information even if we think that information is distorted ... the proper vehicle to combat the lies should be through the legal system and through "counter education" ... we can make our own case to the American people without blocking their right to hear and watch whatever they choose to hear and watch ...

having said that, i must give great credit to the online political community for shining such a bright spotlight on the ABC film's distortions about 9/11 ...

ask yourself this: did Brit Hume and Fox news uncover the truth about the film and fight to have the errors corrected? so much for fair and balanced, eh?

20. well, that's a good question ...
my view is that the intent of google bombing is to make alternative views inaccessible ... it's sort of like putting so many huge piles of "your" newspapers all around the newstand that readers looking for other papers can't get to the one they came to buy in the first place ...

so, while i agree with you that google bombing is indeed "counter education", i think it's main intent is obstruction rather than competition ... just as we on the left rightly abhor the excessive centralization of the MSM, google bombing seems to be guilty of the very same form of control ...

We have to fight back with the truth. And if the media is so overwhelmingly biased to the right, we must have a way to combat it. Free speech is free speech, whether it is on the Internet or in the print and electronic media. So we Google bomb to get our voice heard. Seems like a good idea to me, given what we are up against.

I still stand by that statement - but it doesn't apply to a Google bomb.

If someone wants to look this up, once they know about a planned "bomb," they won't google it - they'll just go to ABC's site directly. Is that really what we want them to do.

Once again, it's a case of a reactionary plan coming around to shoot us in the foot. We're hurting our own cause. Again.

dissemination of information.

It's an old, old political strategy using "new" technology.

Take a look at what goes on in the corporate media given the filter on the news provided by the corporations. Is that news? Is it accurate? See much of the Democratic message out there? They've choked off the information in favor of their own biases. Google bombing is the internet version of the same.

When I Google for information, I check out what the sources of info are. I speed past any that look suspicious. It is up to the Googler to do this. We are just supplying our information. You give them too much POWER if you fear them. They need to fear US, not the other way around. They will NEVER like us, they will NEVER respect us, and they want us COWED, and afraid to speak up for fear that THEY will somehow insult us. Fuck them. And the horse they rode in on!

We have economic power, we have numbers, and if you think WE are the only ones to use the "Google bomb" you'd be wrong. MORE EVIL THAN SATAN used to pull up Microsoft. And that was YEARS ago. The MISERABLE FAILURE one is famous, and they went after Michael Moore too. It's a two way street, it is an old technique, and only Luddites like the stone-cold nitwits at FAUX think it's somehow "new."

Any methodology to point clueless kids researching what they learned after their mandatory six hour homework assignment of falsehoods to the truth is a GOOD thing.

And if you can't see that, well, you can't see that.

54. AGAIN...please read before you post & stop with the irrelevant comments!
I'm scared of the GOP and what they think of us? Where did I say that?? NOWHERE - in this thread or any other.

I'm trying to win elections. I don't want the voters to look at us as fools and vote for the right just because they can't stomach voting for the left - as they have done in the last few years. It's not because the left isn't good enough or our candidates aren't better than theirs, because we are and they are.

It's (1) because we don't communicate our points clearly enough and (2) because we keep handing them events and comments that get spun against us (as in this case). We don't think before we talk. We don't think before we walk. And as a consequence, we consider end results and they come back to bite us in the ass. We have no strategy to beat them at their own game. And, as a result, we become Rover's whipping-boy. It's high time that stopped.

Now...I answered this absurd accusation, but it's the last one. Like I said, I'd love to have a mature conversation with you (debate and different opinions are fantastic IMO), but if you're just looking to argue and are therefore going to pull stuff out of you ear and accuse me of saying things I've never said, well, have fun...but you'll be talking to yourself.

FAUX is on this like white on rice. And no one else is. WHY?? Because it ISN'T news!!!

And who is this "us" of which you speak with such consternation? The Democratic Party? Noooo...I don't see any Google bomb directions on their website, do I? The DNC? The DLC? How about those Democratic state organs? Noooo, nope, and naaaah. MOVE ON? THINK PROGRESS? Huffington Post? Michael Moore, the greenie? Nope and nope. Naaaw, and unh-unh.

When Brit Hume goes after "Democratic Underground" over a bit of back and forth here about Google bombing, they've LOST. It's as good as being the first to yell NAZI in an argument.

They're swatting at little DU flies while their elephant has been beaten to the ground and is being fucked by a giant Democratic wooly mammoth.

We may think we are a HUGE group, but actually, we're rather small in the big picture of things. We can make a difference, and we do, but when you worry about "us" you have to realize that the Democratic Party is a huge tent, and we occupy a single, cozy chair in the corner of that huge tent.

Google bombs have a LONG history. I've tried to point them out in this thread. Go on, GOOGLE the term...it's a classical internet approach. It's not nefarious, and people do it ALL THE TIME.

Stop being afraid.

61. I doubt it. It's just a metaphor for "storming the castle".
In this case the castle happens to be corporate media.

You aren't the enemy. I disagree with your approach, but you're on the same side of the barricades as the rest of us, even though you hang back and are unwilling to challenge the GOP on the front lines.

The thugs on the other side of the barricades are the enemy. They are the ones I want to charge, fight and defeat. The ones I refuse to fear. The ones I won't tiptoe around.

42. I think you've missed how the gop and the neo-cons in charge
operate. It matters not one whit what Democrats do or say. It will be twisted and perverted. Period. And if it doesn't exist, they'll make it up.

THEY control the media; newspapers, television, many cable stations, radio, and it looks like they're moving into Hollywood and they control the government...but not the internet (though they're working on that as well). This is one venue where we have access and some modicum of input.

They control "the message". They have done so for the past 30-40 years. Why else do you think the word Democrat is associated with the now denigrated word liberal which is associated with socialist and which is associated with communist? The progressive/socialist/communist link was originated by the Department of War; now known as the Department of Defense. They began the propaganda as far back as the 20s; no, further back than that, I'm sure.

"A mature, logical way"?! Take a look at the link I provided above. Was that mature? Logical?

How much longer are you going to play nice and be polite while being dragged through the mud, called a traitor and threatened by your own government before you figure out that not one damned thing we do or say is more damaging to our cause than what they have already done to it ?

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." Edmund Burke

What makes it bad? I don't know the answer to the question. Specifics, please.

40. She already answered.
she thinks it somehow "obstructs" people from searching for info on the show. IMHO it shows a total misunderstanding of what it means to "google-bomb". All it does is move up in the list the likelihood that the search will lead to a good site. With enough posts it will be the chosen site for "I'm feeling lucky."

45. FOR. THE. LAST. F'ING. TIME.
I'll repeat - for the last time:

1) The GOP will turn it around and use against us to show the world we are infantile, ineffective and tiresome. They've already started this campaign with the Fox News announcement. They've already got people laughing at us. Not only will it hurt the reputation of the left, it will also hurt the reputation of DU.

2) Once people hear about it, do you think they'll even use google it? Of course not. Why would they? They'll just look up the ABC site directly. That's where this idea will push people - to the very "source" we're looking to eliminate. It's counterproductive.

3) It's childish. We should not ever stoop to their level.

And, once again, please read a post before you respond to it! Thank you very much.

51. People who hate us already are laughing at us, like they've done
for the last six years. The laughter won't increase or decrease because we do something they don't like. In fact, if we start scaring the shit out of them with a little "in your face" FUCK YOU, for a change, maybe they'll laugh less. If we threaten their business donors with serious boycotts, maybe their donors will peel off. After all, you donate to be part of a winning team, and if no one is buying your crap, you can't donate, can you?

Maybe they'll start getting scared. They should be.

The GOP has used this method themselves. It isn't a new technology.

It isn't childish--it's gaming to increase a ranking of a VALID item of information. What we are doing is showing people an ALTERNATIVE "path" to 911--but a path, all the same.

Stop fearing Brit Hume. He's just a guy who looks like an ugly version of Herman Munster. He's not all powerful, or even very smart. He's a tool who takes direction well, nothing more.

60. So, if they are the minority, stop being afraid of them
Do you think someone who googles PATH TO 911 and gets a responsible article about truthful events is going to get all huffy and upset?

The only people who might get upset at that 'top choice' on Google are rightwing LOONS.

Do you think Faux viewers, dropping precipitously every month of late, are going to decide to change their vote from Dem to GOP on hearing this? NO, they're gonna continue to vote the way Brit Hume tells them to. And for the odd independent viewer watching, once they google the term and see the article, they'll see the sense in the choice. Not that it has even gotten up to the top of google at this point.

Faux is the only one making this an issue and they preach to a GOP choir. And you're one of the few, besides them, who is upset about it. You're fretting over something that hasn't even occurred yet.

43. google-bombing is FUN but it is childish
My concern as AZBlue astutely pointed out is that it is playing into the hands of the wingnuts. However, then again it may be a tactic to dissuade us from doing just that. Who the hell knows.

I agree with the argument AZBlue makes but my hope is that ABC will see the light and pull the mockudrama. And that will occur shortly after monkeys fly out of my butt.

56. A Google bomb is a GOOD idea!
I think the whole idea is sound and worthy of praise. Have not the Republicans taken every opportunity to manipulate the media and the framing and the terms of debate, swindled citizens, abused both the letter and the spirit of the law, LIED repeatedly in the face of blatant facts, and fanned the flames of hysteria without compunction?

We are simply coaxing compliant programs like Google to approach the truth rather than the random.

86. It seems to me that this is a bit different
from the other Google bombs mentioned here. They, it seems to me, had the purpose of ridiculing a person by linking their bio to a derogatory term.

The currently proposed Google bomb, it seems to me, has the purpose of attempting to provide alternative information to people who might not otherwise get it.

Anyway, I find Google bombs, in moderation, amusing. Thanks for pointing some out.
