Nancy Reagan tells Webb (D-VA-Sen) to pull ad
Here we go:

A three-paragraph letter from the former first lady's office said using footage of President Reagan is "neither authorized nor appropriate."

An ad Webb intends to begin televising Monday features Reagan praising Webb--then an assistant secretary of defense--during the 1985 U.S. Naval Academy commencement.

"James' gallantry as a Marine in Vietnam won him the Navy Cross and other decorations," Reagan says on the video.

Webb was campaigning in southwestern Virginia and not immediately available for comment Friday. His campaign spokeswoman, Kristian Denny Todd, said the ad was fair and the attacks against it politically inspired by Webb's Republican opponent, Sen. George Allen.

"At this time, we are not changing our plans," Denny Todd said....cont'd at

7. Rove was my first thought too
Only because Webb is pro-stem cell as is Ms. Reagan. This is truly bizzarro. Maybe we should wait for Ron,Jr to weigh in...he would like Webb's positions on the issues :)

6. I smell a Rove....
from the article:

"The letter, sent from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation in Simi Valley, Calif., came the same day Allen enlisted three close former Reagan advisers to denounce use of the 21-year-old video clip to imply that Reagan, who died in 2004, would support Webb."

8. Huh?
So Sen. Allen's campaign gets to speak for Reagan - saying that Reagan would not have supported Webb were he alive and not stricken by alzheimers. How the hell do they know? Reagan used to be a Democrat and looking at the current GOP who knows what Reagan would do today.

Webb's ad sounds effective, no wonder they are freaking! Sorry Nancy, but mind your own business.

See this is what pisses me off. When are the Democrats going to stop aping, coddling, appeasing, or getting the approval of conservonuts??

It sends a terrible message. As if we Democrats didnt take ENOUGH of a beating in the last two big elections because we were trying to be GOP lite, we now need to show us cozying up to Mr. Iran Contra?

Give me a damn break.

30. The beauty of the ad is...
That Reagan is praising Webb in the same way any Democrat might...simply talking about his service. At the same time, here in RED, Reagan loving Virginia, it is the kind of thing that will get Indies and some Republicans to cross over.

It is a very effective ad, and Nancy Reagan is way outta line in asking it be pulled. The public comments of the President of the United States is always not only fair game, but by definition, in the public domain!

If that ad goes on, it really looks like Webb will win this thing. It really is hypocritical of the Allen campaign to do that.
