What a surprise: GOP U.S. attrny for NJ launches investigation of Menendez

Bush-appointed, Republican U.S. attorney for New Jersey, Christopher Christie, decides to launch an investigation into Democratic Senator Robert Menendez' finances less than two months before Election Day. Menendez is running against the GOP's Tom "Sponsored-by-the-Club-For-Growth" Kean, Jr., who has already got a Rove smear campaign going. (Residents of NJ's 5th Congressional District might remember the dirty tricks operation that the Club For Growth organized on behalf of Republican candidate Scott Garrett four years ago.)

Not coincidentally, Christie is the front-runner to be the GOP pick to run for Frank Lautenberg's Senate seat in 2008.
