Kerry finds support in Maine.
Baldacci backs Democrat's campaign at Portland rally
PORTLAND -- Gov. John Baldacci -- a day removed from an automobile accident that sent him to the hospital -- phoned in his support for U.S. Sen. John Kerry's presidential campaign Thursday.
Baldacci, whose sister, Lisa, works for the Kerry campaign, announced his endorsement minutes before Kerry spoke to hundreds of supporters at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Portland. Supporters roared as the governor's voice, booming over the loudspeaker at the Cumberland Avenue club, declared Kerry a "true New England patriot," and the best Democrat to challenge President George W. Bush in November.
During his speech, Kerry was heckled by an audience member who asked him to explain why he voted in favor of the Patriot Act and initially supported the war with Iraq. The heckler did not identify himself as a supporter of another candidate.
Kerry deflected the barb, telling the audience the Bush administration violated the nation's trust when it did not acquire broad-based international support before going to war.
