Bush wants to renew Social Security push after vote

*************so..........is the fix in for the NOV elections or is he talking out his azz?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush hopes to revive his plan to overhaul the U.S. Social Security retirement program if his Republican party keeps control of the Congress in the November midterm elections, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday.

Despite polls suggesting Democrats have their best chance in years to regain control of the House of Representatives, Bush told the newspaper in an interview he was confident a power shift was "not going to happen."

"I just don't believe it," he said, adding that if Republicans prevail at the polls, next year might be a good time to reintroduce the effort to reshape Social Security because he could "drain the politics out of the issue."

1. Of course the fix is in.
There is no way in hell they are going to risk letting the peasants decide who their rulers will be. Why should they? They have the will and the means to cheat - and they are going to allow honest elections? Not in our lifetimes.

2. The bigger question is if the problem of e-voting has been resolved
I don't think it has, and the elections are right around the corner.

5. How could he drain the politics out of it?
It would be the same situation as in 2005. Right after an election and 2 years from the next congressional election. Same politics as before.

6. Ram it through or attach more amendments to bills that would start the
process like the one they just passed requiring all of us to have 401-K's that our company decides the funds that our contributions go into. That's how he will sneak his SS Privatization through. Bit by bit...until there's nothing left. He might even get some Dem crossover support for it even if we take back Congress.

7. He can't run again -- this has been his issue since grad school, but
this may be a gift for us-- If handled right - even if the GOP retains Congress - this is a non-starter. But if we Dems handle this right this could pull more "undecideds" over to our side. Consider--
  1. Most "Boomers" - especially those of us in the "Bottom 98%" do not have an adequate "retirement estate" to carry us over either (1) sans Social Security or (2) sans our employer funded "defined benefits" ERISA plan.
  2. The good old employer funded ERISA "defined benefits" plan is on the Endangered Species list.
  3. That good old employer funded plan is "dischargeable" in the case of the employer's Chapter XI or absolute bankruptcy.
  4. The FPBGC only pays a few cents on the dollar when an employer plan folds.
  5. Employee hand books used to say "Plan for your retirement -- 1/3 Social Security, 1/3 Company Pension, 1/3 Personal Savings" ?? What happens if Social Security goes away?
  6. Employer funded "MediGap" insurance is history.
  7. "Active Oldsters" are the backbone of grass roots political organizations and "one on one" lobbying.

And these GOP Senators and Congresscritters have to run for re-election in 2008.

11. Please, everyone, SPREAD THIS INFORMATION as widely as possible.
Bush's push to privatize social security after the last election was the most unpopular of his moves. People will simply not vote republican if they think the republicans will destroy social security. People care much more about the little that remains of this safety net than they do about abstract terror warnings.

Tell everyone you know about this, liberal or conservative -- especially conservative.
