John Gibson: It was OK for Arnie to call Latina legislator "hot blooded"
Not Every Observation on Race Is Racist
Friday, September 08, 2006
By John Gibson

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,213080,00.html

As Sigmund Freud supposedly said: Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Same with things that are said about race. Sometimes something said about race isn't racist, but sometimes we're all just too PC to face up to that fact.

For instance, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was caught on tape saying something about a fellow California politician — a woman, a woman he likes — which a lot of people are gasping was racist. Schwarzenegger said: "Cuban, Puerto-Rican, they are all very hot. They have the, you know, part of the black blood in them and part of the Latino blood in them that together makes it."

He was talking about Bonnie Garcia, a Latina legislator. Garcia says she is not bothered by the governor's remarks. She refers to herself as a hot-blooded Latina — very passionate about her causes and issues. But The L.A. Times got hold of the tape and printed the remarks and the implication is that the governor is racist because he said what he said. He isn't.

Not every observation made about race is racist. And when a person makes an observation about race it isn't always, per se, racist. So can we just lighten up? Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. That's My Word.

1. Calling someone hot blooded or something, by itself isn't racist...
but Arnold actually MENTIONED race in the comment and that race was the REASON for being hot blooded. In other words, it was a RACIST comment.

4. Yes...if he meant "passionate about her causes and issues"...
...which he clearly did not. Schwarzenneger has a long and documented history of letting the little head do the thinking for the big one.

7. Actually, I always thought hot-head was an insult...
sort of like saying someone has a temper, or is being irrational. That's enough of an insult, but pulling the race card as Arnie did is just inexcusable. You know, if he just left it at calling her a hot-head, we would still critisize him for being an asshole, but at least, in this instance, not a racist asshole.

9. Who gives a rat's ass what John Gibson has to say about anything?
He's already proven time and time again that he's the resident whacko on the government news agency, FOX.

10. Just because a particular individual is not offended by a comment
Does not mean that the comment is not offensive. I work with a lot of white guys and sometimes they say incredibly rude things about women, gays, and people of other races. Most of the time I blow it off because I simply don't have the time and energy to confront every display of ignorance in my vicinity.

As for the legislator, I wonder how tolerant she'd be if she were ever turned down for a job because the manager believed she would be "too hot blooded" for the organization. Or if her opponent distributed campaign flyers warning against voting for a Latina based on stereotypes. Different story maybe?

11. Even "benevolent" stereotypes are racist
For example, saying that Jews are good with money, that Chinese are good at math, and that black men have big penises is still stereotyping, racist, and ultimately degrading.

So is saying that Latinas are "hot-blooded."

Period.

Der Gropenfuhrer has gone and hugged the guacamole baby.
