Condi on Fox: There WERE ties to Iraq, you guys! WMDs too! Totally!

Rice stands by claims of Al-Qaeda-Saddam links

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060910/ts_alt_afp/usattacksiraqqaedarice

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice insisted that Al-Qaeda operatives in Iraq were developing weapons of mass destruction prior to the ousting of Saddam Hussein. Rice, giving a series of interviews ahead of the fifth anniversary of the September 11 Al-Qaeda attacks on the United States, brushed aside a recently released US intelligence report saying there was no evidence Saddam's regime was helping Al-Qaeda obtain such arms.

"There were ties between Iraq and Al-Qaeda," she said on Fox News Sunday. Rice specifically linked Al-Qaeda's presumed leader in Iraq at the time, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, to the effort to develop chemical arms.

"We know that Zarqawi was running a poison network in Iraq," she said, reaffirming statements made by President George W. Bush and herself prior to the March 2003 invasion of Iraq linking Baghdad with Osama bin Laden's group. Rice stood by the claim Sunday despite a February 2002 report from the Defense Department's intelligence arm which was just released by a Senate Committee and stated that Iraq was "unlikely to have provided Bin Laden any useful (chemical or biological) knowledge or assistance."

"That particular report I don't remember seeing," Rice said when asked if she and Bush had not ignored the assessment by the Defense Intelligence Agency. "There are conflicting intelligence reports all the time," she said. "That's why we have an intelligence system that brings those together into a unified assessment by the intelligence commit of what -- community of what we're looking at."

3. They have to keep The Big Lie going otherwise the are 100% toast.
Zogby still has 65% of Republicans thinking Saddam is linked to 9/11. If this falls too low, then even Republicans will start asking why we went to war with Iraq.

5. Yep, it's their only hope to keep some people questioning that it was like
they have told us all along. Without the lies, they are nothing but common criminals who have gotten people killed.

9. I think he has a low tolerance level for other people speaking.

Seriously...even if the person speaking is one of his puppets. He generally looks irritated, bored, detached...unless of course it's a fluffy photo-op thing and they're talking about how great the economy is and how we lucky we are to have Junior as our president. Then he's all smiles. If it's a discussion of policy, especially anything that challenges his "success" in fighting "The Wa On Terra," he generally has an expression similar to the one in the photo I posted.

11. well, if that is the standard: there were ties to US and Al-Qaeda
They trained in the US--ohmygod, we are an axis-of-evil! We are a sponsor of terrorism!

It has been confirmed again and again: Iraq has nothing to do with 9/11 and nothing to do with Al-Qaeda.

They are bigfatliars.

12. Cracks me up that even on Fox they were trashing Condi Rice for that
In a telltale indication of how furious even many ex-hawks are becoming, Chris Wallace was basically humiliating Condoleezza Rice on Fox--

http://ronbeas2.blogspot.com/2006/09/condi-rice-spinning-badly.html

That's gotta hurt. The whole BS about Saddam being connected to al-Qaeda just doesn't fly anymore, even on Fox, and Condi's only making a fool of herself. That embarrassing little humdinger about the CIA evidence has been getting splashed all over the nation lately. Not only did Saddam rebuff offers of alliance from Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda, he actively sought to break the power of Salafists and fundamentalists within Iraq, and he was working to arrest Abu Musab al-Zarqawi-- who evaded arrest, ironically, because he effectively had safe haven within the Kurdish no-fly zone that the US and UK were enforcing!

Yet of course, our illustrious POTUS George W. Bush just knew in his heart that Saddam and Osama were best buddies, high-quality intelligence be damned. Oh, also there were WMD's in there, you betcha. As a direct consequence, the United States is going bankrupt in Iraq while effectively turning it into a massive jihadist recruiting ground the likes of which not oven OBL himself could have imagined (and that Saddam was effectively blocking, if in his crude way), and enabling Iran to gain control of the oil-rich southern region.

Saddam was thuggish, but at root, it seems that his violent attacks were basically directed against those who challenged or rebelled against the regime-- pretty much all those stories about the "ovens for Shiite kids," the meat-grinders and all that crap have been debunked. Saddam was a crook and a megalomaniac, but he was nowhere near the league of the nasty 20th-century dictators. He was more of a Francisco Franco than a Pol Pot-- paradoxically, with a secular regime that ensured some measure of freedom for women and religious minorities (esp. Christians), probably not as repugnant as some of the regimes of our "allies" in the region. Yet Bush couldn't see past his own personal obsessions and Condi was far too grovelling and incompetent to suggest a change in course, and it's we, the US taxpayers, who are picking up the bill for the disaster-- a bill that's literally bankrupting us as a nation.
