Who Destroyed Post-9/11 Unity? The GOP, That's Who

One enduring truth about our politics today that big news orgs and mainstream commentators can't bring themselves to acknowledge is that yes, there is a party which bears the great majority of the blame for the destruction of whatever sense of national unity prevailed after the Sept. 11 attacks. It's true: The blame for killing that short-lived period of unity and for bringing about the years of bitter partisanship around national security that followed should mainly be placed squarely at the feet of the GOP. Though this fact is central to understanding what's happened to this country politically in the last five years, acknowledging it is generally considered to be outside the bounds of acceptable political opinion -- it's just something one doesn't say.

Here's the bottom line: We shouldn't be afraid to tell the truth about which party's really to blame for the destruction of post-Sept. 11 unity -- even on Sept. 11. Especially on Sept. 11.

4. They used a "Divide and Conquer" strategy to win in 2002.

The campaign against Max Cleland is the perfect example. To compare your friends, neighbors and family with different beliefs to Osama Bin Laden is disgusting, and they did that only to win an election.

We have all learned that Republicans ONLY care about their re-elections, power, and money. They practice unconcious capitalism, and even the search for Osama Bin Laden came second to re-election in 2004, as shown by the lack of attention to Bin Laden during the campaign.

Rove explicitly laid out the GOP's party-wide national-security strategy going into the 2002 midterms by telling an audience: "We can go to the country on this issue because they trust the Republican Party to do a better job of protecting and strengthening America's military might and thereby protecting America." It hasn't let up since: in January, Rove reiterated the same idea, this time about the 2006 elections.

It's public record, they fully intend to exploit a national tragedy to win elections.

This is the kind of exploitative, manipulative, and downright SICK thinking we are up against.

10. Post 9-11 unity was idiocy.

It involved delusional people singing religious/nationalist ditties and nationalistic flag displays. The whole thing was a giant act of political theater intended to set the stage for the neocon wars. It was very successful.
