TDS on ABC’s 9/11 series and a forgotten man named Osama
By: John Amato on Tuesday, September 12th, 2006 at 3:30 AM - PDT

After a two week hiatus, it was nice to see the Daily Show back and in top form. Jon takes on the Path, saying he’s glad that 9/11 gets the same made-for-TV-movie treatment that the "Amy Fisher" story got.

Stewart: I mean these are network executives making these decisions about these films. Be thankful that Condoleeza Rice character is still black.

He also provides an extensive psychological examination of the President’s stages of grief.

Senior WH Correspondent John Oliver also joins in to update us on the national security status and the lessons Bush has learned since 9/11 and Katrina.

Stewart: George W. Bush in the right man to lead us in the era of post-whatever horrible calamity he leads us into next."

2. Stewart had some great lines last night but the show missed unlike
Colbert Report that was right on the money and high energy. Jon seemed to lack energy and given that TDS (as well as CR) have been on vacation for over two weeks, I was surprised that TDS didn't do a better job of mining all the political fodder that had occurred over those two weeks. Instead, they did a piece on hunting animals!!!!!

Even the piece on Bush's stages of grief was not as sharp as it could have been. Many of the clips were from the same Bush appearance and not as well chosen as they usually are. It was clever but not up to the regular high level of writing that characterizes TDS.

The interview with the guest, Maggie Gyllenhaal, was really lacking. I had the feeling that Gyllenhaal was a last minute fill in. Stewart was not even up to speed enough on her new film to ask good questions that would even get us interested in going to see it.

You have masterfully noted nearly all the good lines/moments from last night's TDS, but we have come to expect more and have really been looking forward to the return, so that last night was a let down.

I agree with someone on another thread that TDS has lost many of its "correspondents" and the new ones don't measure up to those who have been lost.

John Oliver is fine reporting from "overseas," but for reporting from here on U.S. soil, someone who looks American and talks like a North American is better. Since TDS spoofs real news, the reporters for TDS should look more like the real thing, I think...just off a bit.

Colbert is lucky in this regards because it is just Colbert and a guest to interview usually, so he doesn't have to rely on the quality of his "reporters."

TDS just needs to increase the energy and get the rhythm back, and even with a less than stellar supporting cast, it will still be one of the best and most creative offerings in our culture. Jon Stewart alone can carry that off!

5. Colbert was--hit every mark, high energy, mine the political fodder
Both Colbert and Stewart are comic geniuses.

We are very lucky to have them!

It would make for a great sig line.

Where did the lines come from??? Nevermind...I had something in brackets. Instead of brackets there was a line through everything from the bracketed letter forward.
