Rude Pundit: Advice To Democrats: One Talking Point To Rule Them All
Democrats are about to face an untold amount of fear and savagery in the upcoming Congressional races. Once the niceties of the primaries are done, the Republican campaign machine is going to go into overdrive in a way that'll make the Swift Boat Vet attacks look like flea bites. If you're a Democratic candidate and you've ever scratched your ass in public, you can be sure that a picture with your hand on your own ass will be spread around with the implication that you are gay because you like finger-on-keister action.

What Democrats need is a message that says, "We're not playing." The beauty of what Keith Olbermann has been doing lately on his MSNBC show Countdown is that he's made it safe for public figures to use a certain kind of rhetoric. When he says that Bush needs to hope for forgiveness (as he did last night), he's put out language in to the air that can now be built upon, much like Rush Limbaugh did for the right (and, Christ, no, the Rude Pundit's not saying that Olbermann is the Limbaugh of the Left). But it's gotta be tailored, simple, easy to recite and easy to remember. And the Rude Pundit's got it.

Follow the bouncing ball, motherfuckers; it's gonna be a weird ride:

See, Republicans like to say that they are the party of personal responsibility. They're the ones who believe that if you give a man a fish, you feed him for one day (which is a reductionist view of welfare), but if you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime. Republicans think they are teaching. But their philosophy is actually something more along the lines of "You deal with your own shit. Suffer or learn. Sink or swim."

Liberals (which a couple of Democrats actually are) are the ones who wanna teach the guy to fish, but they also know (as the Rude Pundit's said before) that the guy needs a fishing pole, string, bait, and maybe a fish or two to eat while he's learning. That was the idea of the New Deal, the War on Poverty, and everything else that the right has undone. The liberal philosophy says we know you wanna deal with shit on your own, but we recognize that it's a path to get there and you might need some help along the way.

This gets us, through a bizarre, fucked-up route, back to fear. Republicans have to sow fear again and again, but they don't give anyone the tools to deal with the fear other than to demand that the citizens become dependent on the government for safety and parental oversight. What were Bush's speeches last week except a series of statements on what there is to be afraid of and how we should be scared enough to hide while the government takes care of all the monsters under the bed.

Democrats need to counter that message not by saying that they'll be better parents - that they won't fuck the neighbors or they won't blow the bank account on high-quality smack. No, instead, they need to offer a message that appeals to the American desire to have the guts to stand up to bullies big and small; a message that says that your vote doesn't have to confirm your fears, but it can be a method of saying that you're not afraid anymore. So howzabout this one:

"Don't let Osama Bin Laden tell you how to vote."

Focus group that motherfucker. It becomes shorthand for the bullshit hysteria the Republicans have wanted to provoke. It reminds people that Bin Laden is still out there without explicitly saying it. It says that for the last two elections, the American people have voted because Bin Laden scared them into voting a certain way. It evokes the constant quoting of Bin Laden that Bush has been doing, quotes that'll certainly be echoed by the media and by congressional candidates.

Look at this short speech segment that's possible: "My opponent has said that Osama Bin Laden wants to destroy America. My opponent wants you to be very scared. He says that's why you should vote for him. Well, I say to the people here in , 'Don't let Osama Bin Laden tell you how to vote.'"

One simple message, Democrats. One that'll echo in people's ears as they go to the polls where they can see the act of voting as an act of defiance, of Bin Laden, of Bush.

http://rudepundit.blogspot.com/

The Rude One's 100% on target with that call.

12. Sorry,.. I Can't Buy Into This,......
---- The Rude Pundit's intent of dispelling fear as a voting criterion is clear,... but the suggested "talking point" does not logically follow,.. Anyone feeling a threat from al-Queda and finding more comfort or security in the kick-ass militarism of the Bush administration will be unmoved by this line. They were already letting their votes be determined by bin Laden, and they didn't make any bones about it. Rude Pundit's line sounds like something Hoover could have said right after the Stock Market crash in '29. I don't like it. We have to do better than that.

14. What happen to the tough American?
What is this country coming to that so many can be "scared" into submission? How many of us go out and about daily and never give a thought to being attacked by a terrorist?

Hell yes, we want border, port, nuke plant, etc. security, but no one I know is fearful of everyday life. bush is another issue, he is something I truly fear.

17. You may have missed my point,..
---- Lyonn,... I am hardly saying that democrats should not reject the administration's plying of fear as an election device,.... far from it. I was objecting to the fact that Rude Pundit skipped a step in his reasoning,... failing to show the irrationality of the sort of fear being plied by the administration. Belief is a powerful thing,... you can't just jump over it.

----And as for "tough Americans," you probably would not care to hear about how a "Parisle" administration would handle the neocons.

18. Great idea. But Democrats won't do it.
Like a lot of the people here, those Democrats believe that reciting a doctoral thesis will prove their point to the only people they care to convince, intellectuals and college professors. They care even less for the common man than the Republicans. The Republicans want the comman man to be flunkies and barriers of flesh to throw between them and their foreign enemies. Democrats want them to be attentive and worshipful undergrad students.

Remember what the DLC says; if you use a statement simple enough for people to understand it, the terrorists win.

22. Don't vote for the party that views terrorist attacks as a positive
The GOP pundits are always out in full force gloating on TV after every terrorist attack. They love it and they view it as helping them win elections.

The GOP created their nonsensical war on fear to control people. They want Americans to be afraid all the time: be afraid of terrorists, be afraid of Democrats, be afraid of social programs that may help people, be afraid of any kind of useful homeland security implementations such as port security, whatever just be afraid. Because when people are afraid, they are much easier to rob. Halliburton, Bechtel, Parson's, Raytheon, Boeing, Lockheed, and other companies will save you if you give them lots of money. And the GOP will save you if you vote for them.

Don't worry about drowning when there is a hurricane or dying from a lack of health insurance. It's all Brownie's fault, and when it's not then it's definitely Clinton's fault. The GOP will keep you safe because they are "pro-life".

30. Excellent!
I like this message. I think that many Americans are indeed afraid of Bin Laden, but they would never willingly admit it. Using this message would force them to confront that. Are they really that scared, that they need to use the Republicans as a security blanket? I think the machismo/bravado of many Americans would cause them to vote Democrat just to show that they AREN'T afraid of no stinkin' terrist :eyes:
I also agree that Democrats FAR TOO OFTEN fail to simplify their message. You'll never get Joe Six-Pack to vote for you if ole Joe has no idea what the hell your message is. Simple sound bites are the way to go.

35. I agree with the message, but....
it might be too simple for the fence-sitters to understand. We all connect the statement "Don't let Bid Laden tell you how to vote." to a call for change, but since the Republicans already used that as as campaign strategy in 2004, I don't think it will connect with most disconnected voters this time around. It might also appear that we are co-opting Republican talking points.

Our candidates need to drill home the message that this administration is using fear to advance their agenda. Slogans are nice, but a simple, consistent message is better.
