More U.S. businesses join seafood boycott
Action opposes seal hunt
By BRIAN MEDEL Yarmouth Bureau

YARMOUTH — More than 35 restaurants, mostly Massachusetts-based, have joined the Canadian seafood boycott in support of ending all forms of seal hunting, says the Humane Society of the United States.

And the society is about to reveal later his week that 30 more restaurants in Rhode Island and Connecticut have recently joined the boycott, a humane society spokeswoman said Tuesday.

More than 1,000 American businesses, including restaurants and many individual chefs, are now boycotting Canadian seafood in a variety of ways, said Rebecca Aldworth of the Humane Society of the United States.

Some restaurants have chosen to boycott all Canadian seafood, while some are staying away from East Coast Canadian seafood. Others are boycotting Newfoundland seafood product and some won’t serve Canadian snow crab, which is often caught by fishermen who also participate in seal hunts, said Ms. Aldworth.

The Humane Society of the United States says it is that country’s largest animal protection organization. The society said in a news release the boycott will stop when the seal hunt is stopped.

And while the boycott is aimed at ending the harvest of harp and hooded seals, the Humane Society of the United States is also spreading the word that it is absolutely opposed to any hunt or cull of grey seals off Nova Scotia, said Ms. Aldworth.

1. Excellent!
Great news from HSUS, and a fine decision by each of these eateries.

Thanks for posting.

2. More good news ...
Ralph Lauren, long recognized as a leader in fashion, is now also a leader in compassion after announcing a precedent-setting decision to no longer use fur in any of his apparel or home collections, based purely on ethical grounds.

The Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation had been considering eliminating fur from its lines for some time and finally issued a statement making its decision to go fur-free official after a series of meetings with PETA during which executives viewed grisly undercover video footage of fur farms in China, where more than half the finished fur garments imported for sale in the United States are sourced. Shortly after meetings with PETA in February and March 2006, the company committed to pulling all fur from its shelves. “Fur has never been an integral part of our design strategy …,” said a Polo Ralph Lauren spokesperson. “We are publicly announcing this decision because the use of fur has been under review internally and we feel that the time is right to take this action.”

Restaurants, Chefs, and Companies Taking Action in Support of the ProtectSeals Campaign

After hearing about the horrific treatment of seals at the hands of fishermen in Canada's annual seal hunt, many companies, chefs, and restaurants pledged to boycott some or all Canadian seafood until the hunt is finally ended. Some businesses are boycotting snow crabs from Canada; others are boycotting seafood from the provinces involved in the hunt (Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and Quebec); and others are boycotting all seafood from Canada. If one of them is in your town, stop by to say thank you.

If you don't see your favorite restaurants, chefs, or seafood-selling companies on this page, please talk to them and ask them to join the boycott. If you are a business that would like more information about how to become part of the boycott, please go to this page or contact the manager of the Protect Seal Campaign, Pat Ragan, at pragan@hsus.org or 301-258-3141.
