TX Gov: Rick Perry (R) 33%, everyone else 56% (Rasmussen)
Rick Perry (R) 33%
Carole Keeton Strayhorn (I) 22%
Chris Bell (D) 18%
Kinky Friedman (I) 16%

September 13, 2006

As support for Republican Governor Rick Perry continues to droop, Independent candidate Carole Keeton Strayhorn has again captured second place in the unusual four-way race for Texas Governor.

The latest Rasmussen Reports election poll in Texas finds that Likely Voters now allocate their support as follows: Governor Rick Perry 33%, Chris Bell (D) 18%, Carole Keeton Strayhorn (I) 22%, Kinky Friedman (I) 16% (see crosstabs).

For most of the year, Perry led the pack with about support in the 40% range. But he slid from 40% in July to 35% last month, and hasn't recovered in the current poll.

14. Carole Keeton McClellan Rylander Strayhorn is a "maverick"/"independent"
Republican - the way John McCain is an independent Republican. She produced two famous offsprings for the GOP: Scott McClellan (White House Press Secretary) and Mark McClellan (chief of the Food and Drug Administration, chief of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services).

No family member is left behind.

Edited on Wed Sep-13-06 08:59 AM by gasperc
and Strayhorn way behind
Kinky's the Katrina refugees are a bunch of crackheads and whores won't win many voters, or some this is Texas.

The new Wall Street Journal-Zogby Poll (here: http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/info-e... ) shows Perry crashing to 30.7% while Bell soars to 25.3% as Kinky remains a spoiler and C4n3p continues to flat-line:

30.7% - James "Rick" Perry
25.3% - Chris Bell
22.4% - Richard "Kinky" Friedman
11.1% - Carole "Toast" Strayhorn
2.6% - James Werner

5. Is there a runoff? Or does 1st place win outright even with 20% of votes?

12. That's EXCELLENT! Congratulations to Texas for having a rational system!
Elections should be like that everywhere -- yep, even for President.

16. Nay. Instant run-off voting makes far more sense....
There are several problems with multi-stage elections. First, even if one knows one's own preferences, it's not always clear how to vote in early stages. For example, should a Perry supporter vote for Kinky, thinking that Kinky might be a lesser challenge in the run-off than the other candidates? But if too many Perry supporters do that, then Perry might not make the run-off! A good electoral system discourages voters from trying to game the system, by making a straight-forward vote based on their honest preferences the best way to achieve those preferences. Second, primaries and run-offs have lesser turnout that primary elections. There's no real reason people should have to vote twice, to express their preference.

Of course, run-offs make more sense that simply taking whoever won the plurality. :eyes:

19. There is no runoff in the gneeral election
The candidate with the most votes wins. There is only a runoff in the primary.

24. Chris Bell's website says no runoff
Edited on Wed Sep-13-06 01:23 PM by Freddie Stubbs
At the Aug. 2 meeting of the Kingwood Area Democrats, held at the Forest Cove home of Lon and Martha Cottingham, Chris Bell, Democratic candidate for Texas governor, told a crowd of more than 70 enthusiastic supporters that he can win the race in November.
"No Democrat has won a statewide office here in Texas over the course of the last 12 years. I know I can," assured Bell.

He explained that because it is a multi-candidate race, he will oppose Republican Gov. Rick Perry and independent candidates Kinky Friedman and Carole Keeton Strayhorn, and there will be no runoff.

"Whoever gets the most votes on Nov. 7 is going to the governor's office," said Bell.
"They (Democrats) have gotten, routinely, 38-42 percent of the vote and will most likely win if we keep the Democratic base united. If we draw in some of the disaffected Republicans, and there are a lot of them, and our share of independents, we're in great shape to elect a new Democratic governor and have a new Democratic governor in 2007. That's the object of the exercise."

While an interesting novelty, his campaign can now be relegated to it's rightful place; the dustbin of history.

I think Perry will see the biggest increase. Maybe Strayhorn. But I seriously doubt it will help our guy.

10. true enough
I can't imagine many Dems having voted for Kinky. However, I suspect those that voted for Kinky might just stay home as Goodhair surely can't be attractive to Kinky voters, either.

he unseated Jim Hightower as Texas Agriculture Commissioner, and won an open Lt. Gov. seat before filling Bush's boots when he ran for president in 2000.

There are any number of books out there now talking about how he screwed over just about everyone with the help of kkkarl.

23. I'm already aware of the "bugging" of Rove's office, etc., etc...
and I have a massive pet peeve about being told to "read up" on things that I already know.

I'll certainly grant you that Perry is where he is because of Rove's campaigning style. But the fact remains he did win elections, however filthily he may have done so.

(Is "filthily" a word?)

25. I like how you put that

of course he still has the plurality. It would be nice to see Bell pick up that Plurality. If Perr's in freefall, that might actually happen. It's certain that Bell is in quite a lot of competition between Strayhorn and Friedman. Hopefully Bell can pick off some of Friedman's support as the election nears.
