I'm working to overturn the abortion ban here in South Dakota. I truly fear that if this ban is not defeated on November 7, Roe will be overturned by 2010 and this law (or something similar) will become the law of the land. It will not only be a dangerous law for women, but will strike at the very heart of privacy freedoms granted in the 4th Amendment and enforced in Griswold.

What are other people doing to help elect Democrats, remove Republican theocrats from power and roll back the tide against extremism? How many DU'ers are actively involved in campaigns across the country?

Last night a friend was telling me about her frustration and anger at the Bush Administration but wasn't sure what she could do about it. She's never been very political, but she's had enough. I pointed her towards Bob Casey's campaign since she lives in PA, and gave her links to local Democratic organizations. But it made me wonder: how many other people want to do something but don't know where to start. If you aren't sure how to get involved, try this link http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=358

Others can reply to this message and post links to their campaigns and spread the word.

Out here in the Badlands, our campaign is the South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Familes.

What are other people doing? Who else needs our help?

1. I commend you on your action
It has to be difficult to do what you are doing in the heart of 'enemy' territory.

Here I am doing a lot of canvassing, knocking on doors, handing out lit, asking questions etc. It's still September and I am exahusted already. We need more feet on the ground here. We are working to replace John Sweeney with a real dem:

Contact your local Dem office or DFA for a list of work that needs to be done. We really have to 'walk the walk and not just talk the talk' this election. There isn't a lot of time left to turn things around.

3. South Dakota has a bad rep
And there are some pretty nasty people here, but I have discovered in my canvassing and phone banking that there are a lot of progressive (or at least open-minded) people around here. The problem is that the theocrats have done such a thorough job of intimidating and harrassing that people are afraid to speak up in public. Many of them feel isolated since they don't hear that many people expressing the same opinions they have. These people have been marginalized and shunted to the side. It's going to take a radical change to get them out of their shell. I don't know if even this campaign is enough to do it.

But I do feel good about this. We are going to win and nip this poisonous law in the bud. Hopefully we take back the House (and maybe even the Senate!) and things will start to change all over the country.

2. I'm volunteering with the Diane Benson for Congress campaign...
...trying to get rid of that corrupt bastard Don Young. Here's a link to her site.

We're getting zero help from the Alaska Democratic Party, and as far as I know, nothing from the DCCC either, but Alaska is enjoying a strong anti-incumbent wave right now and Diane is getting increasing grassroots support, so hopefully we can pull it off or at least give old Don "Bridge to Nowhere" a run for his money. I'm sick of him.

and going to a Casey rally in Philadelphia this Monday.

Hopefully, if I can talk my hasband into it, I want to drive the 5 hrs to Johnstown to attend the Murtha support rally. Please, fellow PA'ers (or even NJ & Ohioans) please try to be a body on the ground to support these two Democrats.
